DF Interview: Getting ‘Under the Dome’ with Max Ehrich (Hunter)
By Byron Brewer
A year ago or so, before she passed away, my mother would be thrilled to hear I conducted this interview. Not because she was a large fan of the CBS summer series Under the Dome (although she did enjoy it, despite its SF trappings).
No, Max Ehrich, new this season as “Hunter,” also plays “Fen Baldwin” on The Young and the Restless, Mom’s sole remaining soap opera after the decade-long blood bath of cancellations in the world of daytime drama.
Ehrich made his film debut starring in One Easy Job (2004), then had a supporting role as principal dancer in High School Musical 3: Senior Year. Breaking into television, Ehrich was a recurring guest star in Ugly Betty’s Season 3, playing the role of Randy. He then starred in the 2009 Lifetime Original Movie The Pregnancy Pact as Jesse Moretti, performing alongside Thora Birch, Camryn Manheim and Nancy Travis.
He filmed two pilots for CBS in 2010, and has since shot another pilot as a recurring guest star for the new Country Music Television sitcom, Working Class, starring Melissa Peterman. Among many current TV projects, he recently played the role of Adam in iStart A Fan War, a TV movie for the Nickelodeon show, iCarly.
In 2012, Ehrich joined the cast of The Young and the Restless, also on CBS. Next stop: Under the Dome, last summer’s SF hit based on the writings of thrill master Stephen King.
Dynamic Forces met Ehrich at a veggie food truck under the Hollywood sign and discussed this Dome newcomer’s opinions on the CBS sci-fi series.
Dynamic Forces: Max, you are new to the show for this second summer season. Tell us how you came to be on Under the Dome.
Max Ehrich: I read for the role of Hunter with CBS Casting and the creative team behind the show.
DF: Tell us a little bit about your character, Hunter.
Max Ehrich: He's a city dwelling tech savant who doesn't subscribe to any programmer stereotypes. Being the freethinker he is, he doesn't like people telling him what he can and can't do. In fact, it only drives him more. Hunter lives in Barbie's hometown of Zenith and runs the Hounds of Diana – a website that he created to get to the truth about the origins of the Dome and what’s going on inside of it.
DF: What plot development since your coming have you found the most fascinating/challenging?
Max Ehrich: I don't want to give anything away. There are a few pivotal moments in the upcoming episodes that I found both equally fascinating and challenging to portray.
DF: Were you a fan of the show, or of Stephen King’s writings, before receiving this role?
Max Ehrich: I am a fan of Stephen King's work. IT haunted me for most of my childhood. When I found out a book was being adapted in a television series, I was very intrigued. I thoroughly enjoyed Under the Dome before receiving the role of Hunter.
DF: What is the difference between days on the The Young and the Restless set (where you play young Fen) and on Under the Dome?
Max Ehrich: We shoot a scene on The Young and the Restless in one take (for the most part) with three cameras rolling at once covering all the actors in the scene. On Under the Dome (along with other one-hour dramas) we shoot a scene in a couple of hours from multiple angles and coverage. We film a whole episode of Y&R in one day and it takes about 10 days to film an episode of Under the Dome. We film Y&R on a soundstage. Although a good amount of scenes are filmed on a soundstage on Under the Dome, many are filmed on various locations.
Dynamic Forces would like to thank Max Ehrich (Hunter) for taking time out of a busy shooting schedule to answer our questions. Under the Dome airs Mondays on CBS.
