DF Interview: G.O. Parsons delivers a new brand of twisted terror tale in ‘DOA INC LLC’

By Byron Brewer

In a realm where every conceivable evil prowls unchecked, justice is a rare commodity. Enter DOA INC LLC, a ragtag company of mercenaries ready to exact revenge and eliminate any undead entity causing trouble... for the right price.

Gonzo zombie killing action awaits in the new horror series. Prepare for an adventure set in the wicked world of G.O. Parsons, the writer behind Willy's Wonderland and Beast of Bower Boulevard. Teaming up with artist Emanuele Tommarelli, this dynamic duo delivers a spine-tingling twist on the classic tale of terror. I caught up with G.O, to get the skinny on this new terror treat from American Mythology.

Byron Brewer: G.O., before we get to DOA INC LLC, tell readers how you got into writing, and writing comics. I know you have done some writing for the screen and, if memory serves, some acting as well. Fill us in.

G.O. Parsons: I was in an acting class with a ton of talented artists. I worked in exchange for taking free classes. My job was to find scenes for all the other actors in the studio, so I would read plays and screenplays, hoping to pick out 15-20 new scenes every month.

I started to experiment. I would write my own little One Acts that the students would put up. That snowballed into me doing my own plays -- those grew from no one in the audience to sold-out shows. After one of the performances, I was encouraged to write a screenplay.

I wrote Willy's Wonderland intending to produce it micro-budget with me as The Janitor and my friends in costumes as the animatronics, but I got it to Nicolas Cage, and it blew up into a full-fledged film!

American Mythology expanded on the success of the movie with an excellent prequel series exploring the origins of Willy's Wonderland, and I started to learn the process of creating comic books from Jim Kuhoric and S.A. Check.

I wrote a few Scary Christmas comics and then had my first series with The Beast of Bower Boulevard last year, and now this new series DOA INC LLC.

Byron: From what I know, horror is one of your favorite genres in which to work. What is it about a horror story that makes your scribe creator juices flow?

G.O. Parsons: Horror is the genre that tends to lend itself to having the most fun. There are no rules as far as what's possible. A horror story can be funny, adventurous, scary or dramatic. Horror lets you create unique worlds with intriguing heroes and villains. And the appetite for horror seems almost unquenchable -- the fan base is always looking for new stories and bigger scares. It's definitely a natural fit for me.

Byron: What was the inspiration for your coming comic, DOA INC LLC?

G.O. Parsons: In most horror stories, the villain wins in the end (even if they lose, they always win). With Willy’s Wonderland, I turned that around so that the villains were overmatched and messed with the wrong person, and DOA INC LLC certainly takes inspiration from that idea. The employees of DOA INC LLC are out to turn the tables on all the nightmarish creatures that have haunted our dreams. In the simplest terms, I like seeing bullies get what’s coming to them.

Byron: Tell us about the world you and artist Emanuele Tommarelli are building here, “a realm where every conceivable evil prowls unchecked”.

G.O. Parsons: Every evil creature you could imagine exists, and they're coming out of the woodwork! We'll have the standard monsters, some Creepy Pasta creatures, and then we'll throw in some really far-out stuff to add to the fun. These villains will wreak havoc, leaving a trail of destruction in their wake — and help only comes at a price.

There's an episodic quality to this series. It's like Gunsmoke, A-Team, Kung Fu, and MacGyver, but with more eccentric villains and a much darker world. There'll be some scares. There’ll be laughs. Each book will be a standalone adventure but connect to a bigger story.

Byron: Introduce us to the members of the titular ragtag company of mercenaries that balance the scales on this monster-heavy realm, DOA INC LLC. And in particular, who is The Drifter, the focus of issue #1?

G.O. Parsons: The Drifter is a take-no-guff badass. He's a Hell's Angel without a bike. The man is not looking for trouble per se, but he's always ready to throw hands if the need arises. He's the enforcer of the group -- the strongest, with the shortest temper. Something happened to him in the past, and whatever it was, he's trying to work out those issues by obliterating the undead.

Other members include Slim and Nun -- a cowboy gunslinger and his female partner, who has been excommunicated from the church. Slim is the comic relief, always approaching danger with a joke, and Nun is the moral center.

The group's leader is Marshall Arts, a master of every combat discipline – he's the intellectual and the strategist.

Byron: Can you give readers a little summary of what is going down in #1? An extended and non-spoilery elevator pitch.

G.O. Parsons: Some foolish kids read a spellbook wanting to bring their recently deceased friend back to life, but instead, they summon a horde of undead zombies and a possessed little girl. Naturally, the teens meet their demise, and their parents turn to DOA INC LLC to find closure and seek revenge. And who better to deliver that than the Drifter?

Byron: Talk about the art of Emanuele Tommarelli.

G.O. Parsons: This is our first comic book collaboration, and it's been astounding. Emanuele's unique style breathes new life into every panel, and his ability to translate words into vivid imagery is exceptional. There's a certain flair to his art that perfectly complements the tone and atmosphere of this genre. Working with him has been an absolute pleasure, and I'm excited to see where our creative journey takes us.

Byron: G.O., what projects of yours, inside or outside comics, can you tell readers about?

G.O. Parsons: I'd love for people to check out a three-part comic book series from last year that I did with artist Carlos Rod called Beast of Bower Boulevard from American Mythology. It's about a militarized, mechanized robot dinosaur on a rampage in a quiet ski town. It's got action, adventure and a bunch of video game-like laser guns! I'm totally proud of that one. I'm currently working on a new three-part Hatchet series about the Louisiana swamp legend Victor Crowley. This project is with artist Puis Calzada, also from American Mythology.

Dynamic Forces would like to thank G.O. Parsons for taking time out of his busy schedule to answer our questions. DOA INC LLC #1 from American Mythology Productions is slated to be on sale July 31!
