DF Interview: Dan Abnett goes back to future in ‘Guardians 3000’

By Byron Brewer

It was Dan Abnett, along with partner Andy Lanning, who first introduced the new Guardians of the Galaxy team to Marveldom Assembled back in 2008.

Now, with a Guardians movie based on DnA concepts set to hit silver screens in August, Marvel is bringing back the original Guardians in a whole new series. Oh, the Badoon are there too, we are told, but that is not the entire story.

To get the real 411, Dynamic Forces met Abnett at Starlin’s Bar on the concourse of Knowhere. Here is what we found out.

Dynamic Forces: Dan, how did your return to Marvel and an iteration of the Guardians of the Galaxy book come about?

Dan Abnett: I was invited by Marvel to write an “original” Guardians story for the anniversary issue. The idea was that it was a celebration of the very first story, but also a possible springboard to a series if readers liked it.

DF: We have seen Yondu all over everywhere in recent months, including on the Marvel NOW poster and as a character in the Guardians of the Galaxy film. Will the Yondu in Guardians 3000 be THE main rep of the Centaurians in the Marvel U.?

Dan Abnett: Of course. He’s a dude.

DF: In your previous volume of Guardians of the Galaxy, a variant of the original Guardians allied themselves with Quill & Company. Is the group starring in Guardians 3000 those guys, the team created by Arnold Drake and Gene Colan, or yet some other iteration?

Dan Abnett: Yes and no. It’s them, but it’s the original group too. I’m taking it back to the start, but I’m trying not to deny or contradict any continuity. It’s always been them, one way or another. My opening arc explores this.

DF: I understand from the conclusion of the little bit in Guardians #14 that this team will be coming back to the past (presumably our time). Can you explain without spoilers?

Dan Abnett: It’s all about unraveling the continuity (without making it incomprehensible for new readers).  In 3014, time is fraying and coming apart. The Guardians realize this and fight to correct it. That MAY involve time-travel to other eras, including our own.

DF: Vance Astro in my mind has always been Captain America-SF. Looks like that’s the way you have him characterized too, especially with the Astro encased in ice on the asteroid Hydronis. It seems that way from Guardians of the Galaxy #14, but will the 3000 team’s “Major Victory” be your Captain America?

Dan Abnett: Absolutely. He’s a figurehead and rallying call. But he’s not Cap. He’s Major Victory. His thoughts, feelings and powers are very different from Cap, but magnified by similar yet greater experiences maybe.

DF: I have always thought of Martinex as the Guardian’s Bobby Drake or Giant-Man: just damn hard to make interesting to readers. Can you, Dan, do what no Guardians writer has done before and make Martinex interesting like Bendis has made Iceman amusing? (laughs)

Dan Abnett: Of course I can. Mart is cool, and clever. Watch what I do.

DF: Tell us a little about this incarnation of Starhawk. Every one has a unique quirkiness to him/her/them.

Dan Abnett: Starhawk is male and very mystical. Or is he female? The unraveling of that is part of the core story from issue #1.

DF: It ain’t for lack of trying, but can Charlie be MORE than just a muscle-man? Can he be given more layers than he has in the past?

Dan Abnett: Yes, of course. Charlie is strong, but he’s also fast and he’s funny. He’s the heart of the team.

DF: Will we be seeing anyone around besides Starhawk and the Fab Four (original Guardians) in this team book?

Dan Abnett: Yup! New team members, new supporting cast, new rivals and allies. I want to build the Marvel 3000 Universe.

DF: Since you have this forum now, Dan, will you be tying up any lose ends from the modern team (Jack Flag being “The One” or some such, where the Celestial head of Knowhere originated, others)?

Dan Abnett: I can’t do everything at once, but if this book flies, I have HUGE ideas …

Dynamic Forces would like to thank Dan Abnett for taking time out of his busy schedule to answer our questions. Guardians 3000 #1 hits stores in October!
