DF Interview: Sean Murphy assembles book-saving warriors in his new OGN ‘The Plot Holes’, up on Indiegogo

By Byron Brewer

The Plot Holes are a squad of fictional warriors who transport themselves into the pages of other books, using their unique skills to save the plots in order to stop them from being destroyed. And Cliff is their newest recruit, a comic creator who's just realized his world isn't real—in fact, it's a complete fiction that literally exists inside a novel. The other members are misfits like him, pulled from unpublished books that couldn't be saved: a manga samurai, a barbarian tiger, a kid from a comic strip, and a vampire assassin. Outclassed by the other members, Cliff sets out to prove his worth to The Plot Holes as they fight to save as many books as possible. The only thing stopping them is Surge, an ex-member who's gone rogue—not only is he threatening to destroy the digital matrix containing them, he threatens to destroy the database of digital libraries all over the world!

Writer/artist Sean Murphy returns to creator-owned comics with The Plot Holes, a graphic novel that covers almost as many genres as it will have pages. He has also launched a crowdfunding campaign for the OGN on Indiegogo. DF definitely wanted to talk to Murphy about this project, and here’s what he told us.

Dynamic Forces: Sean, it’s been a while since readers have seen your name on the creator-owned side of the comic book shelves. Why is now the right time and The Plot Holes the right book?

Sean Murphy: Mostly I want to give people a break from my Batman universe – I worry that doing book after book would overwhelm readers, so I decided to switch gears to put out The Plot Holes. With the industry going through many covid-related problems, it seemed like a great time to try crowdfunding again.

DF: So what is the story behind this graphic novel? Is this something that has been on the Murphy backburner for some time?

Sean Murphy: I’ve been trying to do this book for at least three years now. No one expected Batman: White Knight to be such a big success, so I was happy to delay Plot Holes in order to do a Batman sequel.

DF: You certainly have a high comics profile (you’re a Batman man!). Why the crowdfunding route?

Sean Murphy: It’s sort of an experiment – usually I publish the floppy, the trade, the international trade, then the deluxe. This time I’m doing that in reverse – start out with the deluxe, then move internationally, then see about publishing domestically. This allows me to keep a higher percentage of the profits.

DF: So tell readers about the world you will be building in The Plot Holes.

Sean Murphy: The Plot Holes mixes in all different types of genres into one story – the characters are literally jumping from book to book in order to “edit” the plots (improve them) so that each book can be published, thereby saving the world inside each book. It’s really an adventure book that celebrates reading and the joy of comics.

There’s a manga character, a barbarian tiger, a kid from a comic strip, a comic supervillain, and a vampire assassin. I’m getting to tackle my bucket list all in one title, so I’m hoping there’s something in it for everyone.

DF: Introduce us to your protagonist, Cliff.

Sean Murphy: Cliff is a failed comic book creator who’s just realized his world isn’t real – it’s actually inside a novel. A really crappy novel that’s about to get deleted. In order to survive, he joins The Plot Holes, a team made up of misfits from other novels. In order to survive, Cliff has to help them on their quest to save as many books as possible, or face being deleted.

He spent his whole career creating these types of heroic characters, and now that he’s working alongside them, he realizes that he doesn’t quite measure up.

DF: Talk about your campaign on Indiegogo and what readers can do to participate, if they so desire.

Sean Murphy: Click my link to the IndieGoGo project and choose what you want: most people are opting for the hardcover book, but we have less expensive options as well. The book will be over 150 pages when we’re done, so I think it’s a good price for what you’re getting.

DF: Sean, any other projects, inside or outside comics, that you can tell readers about?

Sean Murphy: DC will be making a big announcement soon about expanding the White Knight universe with other creators, so I’m helping manage that. I’m also working with Blake Northcott on a two-part Catwoman story, due out next month. And for 2021, plan on Volume 3 of Batman: White Knight.

Dynamic Forces would like to thank Sean Murphy for taking time out of his busy schedule to answer our questions. The Plot Holes OGN is up on Indiegogo now, check it out! And keep watching DF News and comics-related social media for more information.
