DF Interview: Matt Hawkins shows us how much grit, determination one person can muster in Samaritan

By Byron Brewer

A woman with a vendetta decides she's going to take down the largest military contractor in the world and has the means and a plan that just might work. How do you bankrupt one of the richest, most technologically advanced and successful companies in the world? You steal all their research and give it away to everyone.

Can she survive long enough to pull it off with the entire U.S. government trying to kill her?

To learn the answer to this and other questions about Top Cow’s new series Samaritan, DF spoke with its writer, Matt Hawkins.

Dynamic Forces: Matt, what can you tell us about the female protagonist of your latest book, Samaritan?

Matt Hawkins: The lead character Samaritan is Samantha that we introduced in The Tithe and who also prominently appeared in Eden’s Fall. The FBI pursued her as the hacker vigilante that was robbing mega-churches and giving money to charity before they flipped her and she began to work for them. After the events of Eden’s Fall, she went off the grid into hiding. With the election of the new President, she decides to return and exact some revenge for previous events.

DF: What is this vendetta she has? What can you tell us about the company she seems to hate so badly?

Matt Hawkins: She wants to take down Northlock Industries, a company prominently featured in Think Tank as the leading military industrial contractor. They’re a three hundred billion dollar annual revenue entity that was the President-elect’s primary supporter.

DF: No espionage but taking a mighty company out via bankruptcy? That is different. Since most of your books revolve around stories ripped from today’s headlines, was there any particular inspiration for Samaritan?

Matt Hawkins: Her goal is multi-faceted. She wants to take down this company but that’s almost a side benefit to taking down the President and getting his administration run out.

DF: What other interesting characters do readers need to be on the lookout for in issue #1?

Matt Hawkins: FBI agent Dwayne Campbell is back and working with Mirra Sway from Think Tank to try and get to Samaritan and stop her from doing what she’s doing for her own good. The entire U.S. government is trying to prevent her from accomplishing her goal and they’ll kill her without giving it a second thought. So Dwayne and Mirra want to capture here for her own good.

DF: I have never read a Hawkins book without a powerful subtext? It may be obvious here, but what theme/thread will readers be picking up underneath the story proper?

Matt Hawkins: There is a heavy political, religious, geopolitical, technological and sociological message interwoven into the absolute nonsense that makes up most of my personal creed. (laughs)

DF: How has it been collaborating with artist Atilio Rojo? What does he bring to this new table?

Matt Hawkins: Rojo is amazing! I worked with him on V2 of IXth Generation and he had some big shoes to fill following Stjepan Sejic on that title. He has a great, vibrant color palette that accentuates his dynamic layouts and visual storytelling. It’s a pleasure getting his pages in the email.

DF: Matt, I am sure your projects are legion, but tell us about some of your works that are forthcoming please.

Matt Hawkins: I’m continuing to work on my signature title Think Tank, of course, we’ll be wrapping up V5 this summer. Samaritan runs through the summer. I have several other series in the works including Swing by me and Linda Sejic (a companion to Sunstone), The Clock with Colleen Doran which is a eugenics conspiracy thriller, Stairway with Raffaele Ienco and a few others that are in early stages. Fun stuff! I love what I do!

Dynamic Forces would like to thank Matt Hawkins for taking time out of his busy schedule to answer our questions. Samaritan #1 from Top Cow hits stores May 24th!
