CHARLES SOULE
SEND THIS TO A FRIEND!

DF Interview: Charles Soule has our hero meet The Mayor – with a little help from his friends – in the action-packed Daredevil #600

By Byron Brewer

Daredevil can see the machinations of the new mayor – Wilson Fisk, formerly NYC’s Kingpin of Crime – coming together … but is he in time to stop them? Daredevil #600 guest-stars both the heroes and villains of the New York City streets, and has a surprise ending that will shake the city to its very core!

DF is so excited about this historic volume of Hornhead’s history, we went straight to the storyteller himself to get the street-level 411: writer Charles Soule.

Dynamic Forces: So, Charles, “Here Comes … Daredevil” … #600! How does it feel to be writing the landmark 600th adventure of DD’s book, and does that still put the kind of pressure on a writer as it once did?

Charles Soule: There’s pressure for every issue of Daredevil, considering the massive legacy of the creators who have worked on it previously – but yes, the landmark issues have even more. I wanted to do something here that felt enormous, with massive twists and turns, and real change for both Matt Murdock and New York. Not easy, but very cool once it all came together.

DF: As #600 approaches, we find ourselves in the midst of your “Mayor Fisk” storyline. Give us your assessment of the Kingpin of Crime, Wilson Fisk, at this juncture. Who is he as a character at this point? Where is he mentally and strategically?

Charles Soule: Fisk thinks he holds all the cards – and maybe he does! He’s got the city under his thumb, and it’s going to take quite a lot for him to ever let it go.

DF: As this historic Legacy issue arrives this Wednesday, March 28th, many fans both new and old will hopefully hop on board or re-board the DD train to Level with Daredevil. What do those fans need to know about where both Daredevil and Matt Murdock’s head is at these day?

Charles Soule: Matt’s in a tough spot. His greatest enemy has taken over his city (literally and figuratively), and taking him down will take everything he has. Fortunately, Daredevil has a plan, and he has some friends, too – he won’t be fighting the Kingpin alone.

DF: Over the years, Daredevil has had a strange relationship with the Kingpin. DD has even gone to Fisk for assistance/information in the storied past instead of consulting sources closer to the more legit side of the law. If we could enter Matt’s mind, how does he, at this point (the ongoing “Mayor Fisk” storyline), see his greatest foe?

Charles Soule: All bets are off. Previously, Matt could reassure himself that Fisk was at least on the wrong side of the law. Daredevil was “right,” and the Kingpin was “wrong.” Now, though, everything has been blurred – Fisk was elected mayor of New York City, with all the legitimate, legal power that office holds. In some ways, the Kingpin now IS the city. He’s taken away one of Murdock’s greatest assets – the power of the law. How do you fight that?

DF: Never celebrate a hero’s anniversary without guest stars! You mentioned DD’s “friends” previously. So who will be joining the Man Without Fear for this over-sized anniversary issue, in the Mighty Marvel Manner?

Charles Soule: Tons! It’s a free-for-all for the street-level heroes of New York City. We’ve got Spider-Man, Luke Cage, Jessica Jones, Iron Fist, Echo and Knights both Misty and Moon, all coming together to help Daredevil take down Wilson Fisk, plus of course Daredevil’s protégé Blindspot, who’s really been put through the wringer in this series. What a blast it was to write scenes for all of those folks.

DF: … And the street VILLAINS of NYC too?! Who, who?

Charles Soule: As we’ve seen, the Kingpin wants to carve up the city and hand it off to some of the worst crime bosses in the city, to make them essentially his lieutenants – the Black Cat, the Owl, Diamondback and Hammerhead. Plus, we’ve also got the horrifying serial killer artist Muse bopping around – he’s the chaos in the Cheerios. The DEADLY Cheerios.

DF: Charles, you know me well enough to know I am MISTER NON-SPOILER. That said, I have to ask if you can say anything at all about the “surprise ending that will shake the city to its very core” [solicits]?

Charles Soule: Well… it’ll shake the city to its very core!

DF: Er uh, yeah. … How does it feel to be working with your longtime partners in crime – Ron Garney on pencils/inks, Matt Milla on colors and Clayton Cowles on the lettering – for this most important issue?

Charles Soule: So happy, honestly. When you’re working on a landmark issue, whether because it’s a century-mark or just because it’s an important story point, you want to know you can rely on the team to execute everything perfectly. That’s Team Daredevil 100% -- and not just the folks you named, but every artist who’s worked on the run so far. It’s just been phenomenal, and DD #600 is no exception.

DF: OK, we got over the “surprise ending” hurdle. I know you will be continuing on for #601 forward. Any hints at all I can pry out of you for what’s coming in the next arc(s)?

Charles Soule: It all relates to that surprise ending, but I will say that the idea here is to give Daredevil fans something they’ve never seen before but may have always wanted. Also… Elektra. We’ll see Elektra again soon.

Dynamic Forces would like to thank Charles Soule for taking time out of his busy schedule to answer our questions. The historic and monumental Daredevil #600 from Marvel Comics hits stores this Wednesday, March 28th!
