JASON LOO

DF Interview: Jason Loo reveals what happens when individuals receive the power of a million exploding suns in ‘The Sentry’

By Byron Brewer

The Sentry is dead, but ordinary people all over the world are suddenly manifesting his powers and experiencing snippets of Bob Reynolds' memories. Will one of them survive long enough to emerge as the new Sentry? Or will their newfound power destroy them? When Misty Knight and Jessica Jones cross paths in search of the answers, they open an investigation that will change everything you think you know about the Sentry!

From writer Jason Loo and artist Luigi Zagaria comes The Sentry, shining the spotlight on a being many consider to be Marvel Comics’ strongest hero – before his death. I hopped on board when I heard the adventure is built around Bob Reynolds’ successor(s) and so chatted with the scribe. Here’s what Jason Loo told me.

Byron Brewer: Jason, were you as a comics reader a fan of the long and winding saga of Robert Reynolds and The Sentry?

Jason Loo: This is going to be embarrassing to admit but not really. But he was a character I would observe in the big Marvel events like Secret Wars, Civil War, Siege, World War Hulk, and so on. He's this very powerful, destructive character who would do a lot of unpredictable things, and that made the stories interesting.

Byron: This is a very interesting way of bringing back the hero. Reynolds is gone apparently, but his powers and memories are not. What I want to know: Is The Void gone as well??

Jason Loo: I don't want to give any spoilers as I also want to leave this series feeling unpredictable to the readers. We packed a lot in this four-issue series.

Byron: This brings back memories of the Captain Universe saga, something I always hoped would return in Guardians of the Galaxy. Can you put the spotlight on some of the folks who will be experiencing the power of a million exploding suns?

Jason Loo: Hmmm....there are a good few who are bestowed with the power of a million exploding suns. But I don't know if I want to give you the answers before our sleuths Jessica Jones and Misty Knight find out about our persons-of-interests. But these are very grounded people that we can relate to in our everyday life, maybe not directly, but they could be that clerk at the department store, the person that delivered your food order, the person who did that cool trick on YouTube, or someone you brushed by on the train.

Byron: Possible villains for our Sentry applicants?

Jason Loo: Besides themselves? The U-Foes! The Wrecking Crew!

Byron: Fast Forward: Are there any cries of “Avengers Assemble” in the eventual recipient’s future? Will Reynolds rear his (dead?) head at all in this comic?

Jason Loo: The Avengers will make an appearance in the series! But we will see what the future holds for our lucky successor(s). As for Robert Reynolds, you will see him in some form throughout the series.

Byron: Talk about the pulse-pounding pencils of Luigi Zagaria.

Jason Loo: Luigi Zagaria is a phenomenal artist who is perfect for this project. He delivers the right amount of detail to this series full of mystery and wonder. Readers will be entertained by the explosive action scenes that Luigi delivers. I'm really proud of how gorgeous this series is looking because of him.

Byron: Jason, are there any other projects in which you are involved upcoming – inside or outside comics?

Jason Loo: I wrote a Whaugh If...? story in Howard the Duck issue #1 that drops on November 29. Also, I wrote a Shang-Chi story as part of the Loki Voices crossover over at Marvel Unlimited. And as announced at NYCC, Infinity Paws for the Marvel pet lovers, written by me and illustrated by Nao Fuji. I saw a preview of our first issue and it looks like a summer blockbuster.

Dynamic Forces would like to thank Jason Loo for taking time out of his busy schedule to answer our questions. The Sentry #1 from Marvel Comics is slated to be on sale Dec. 6!
