CONOR MCCREERY & NEIL GIBSON
SEND THIS TO A FRIEND!

DF Interview: Conor McCreery & Neil Gibson invite you into the world of ‘Trickster’, now up on Zoop

By Byron Brewer

Rory is your typical everyday banished Leprechaun.

He runs a bar in Boston and uses his powers of illusion to protect his neighborhood from the thieves of the world – regardless if they use a gun or a contract as their weapon. When monsters from his homeland begin showing up, Rory realizes that not only are these creatures putting humanity at risk – they’re proving disastrous for his drinking time!

You see, Rory has a secret. A millennia ago, he ended the faerie-land’s civil war by stealing weapons of unimaginable power. He’s been in hiding ever since. Now, as his oldest enemy begins to search for the weapons anew, Rory must face the past he escaped from, and the woman he once loved, or else millions – faerie and man – will die.

Trickster is a funny, fast-paced horror-comedy series – a sometimes dark look at a “man” who never believed he could be a leader until he finally chooses to become one. Pouring the perfect pint of Guinness used to be his greatest concern, but like it or not, Rory realizes he’s the one who’ll determine the future of two worlds.

Who’s right, who’s wrong and what we believe is all a matter of perception.

From co-creators Neil Gibson & Conor McCreery (writers) and Veronica Saraceno (artist) comes Trickster, currently open for crowdfunding on Zoop. Join me in finding out about this book coming from writers Gibson & McCreery. I’ve been here before, so hold on!

Byron Brewer: Conor and Neil, tell readers how you came together to create Trickster.

Neil Gibson: Our stories may differ. I came across Conor begging outside of Toronto Fan Expo. He was a poor Irish lad who only wanted money for a pint of Guinness. I took pity on the man and offered to write a comic with him.

Conor McCreery: EXCUSE me, Gibson? Please, the man was in awe of my Kill Shakespeare success and he begged ME to come with him to dinner so he could find out how to replicate my immense success (I agreed, only because I was hungry).

Neil: OK, how I really remember it is I had a concept for a story. It was quite basic but basically everyone already knows what a Leprechaun is. Or do they? I wanted to challenge people’s expectations. Conor loved it and then frankly went above and beyond in all his Celtic research.

Byron: Why did you decide to go the crowdfunding route?

Neil: See my earlier answer – Conor likes begging for money.

Conor: And if I can beg for money all the way across the internet? I mean, you just gotta do that, right?

Neil: OK, with crowdfunding you generate publicity for the material before it is even in shops. You also get some money to help pay for printing/art/coloring etc. Fans get the material early and bonus content. It’s a win-win.

Byron: Can you give us a kind of extended pitch as to what readers can expect after hopping aboard the Trickster train? What is the book all about?

Neil: If people like slice of life stories, where not much happens, this is NOT the book for them. This has action, gore, comedy, monsters, drama, mythology and a little philosophy thrown in. It’s about a Leprechaun who has the power of illusion who fights for the little guy (a bit like the A Team). Why he is living in Boston and why he was banished from the fairylands is the overarching story for the series.

Conor: It has some of the epic feel of something like Fables, while having the horror-comedy chops of Shaun of the Dead. It definitely moves between tones – it’s the kind of book where, when you turn the page, you don’t know if you’ll get slapstick comedy, a real human moment, or something dark and twisted (yet, still safe for work).

Byron: Introduce us to Rory: who he was, who he is, and perhaps who fate is making him as we go forward.

Neil: Oooooh! You are GOOD! Sadly, I don’t really want to reveal this because it is crucial to the overall story. But right now, Rory is the lovable owner of a bar – kinda like Captain Mal in Firefly. He is the boss, but only because the others let him be. He doesn’t command that much respect but he is a good guy.

Conor: But like you hinted there is a LOT to his backstory. Suffice it to say there is a reason he no longer lives in the faerie homelands, and… a reason why this Trickster may be fooling even the people closest to him about who he REALLY is.

Byron: Can you give readers any clues as to Rory’s enemies from the Old Sod, which are showing up in Boston? Who are they, and what effect has their existence made on Rory’s past... and future?

Neil: Again, SPOILERS! All I can say is that after hundreds of years of very limited contact, more and more creatures from the faerie world are turning up in Boston. Why, they don’t know, but it cannot be a good thing…

Conor: In arc 1, we’ll introduce readers to a very nasty parasite from Irish lore, but that will just be the beginning. Through the course of the series fans can expect to interact with all manner of creatures from Irish folklore – from those you know – like the Banshee – to grotesque, strange, and sometimes funny creatures you’ve probably NEVER heard of.

Byron: Talk about the art of Veronica Saraceno and how she became a part of Trickster.

Neil: I saw some of her work in an Italian comic and thought she was brilliant. But don’t take my word for it, just LOOK at it! The wraparound cover alone with color from Agnese Pozza is my favorite cover of any comic I have worked on.

Conor: Neil is really plugged into the European art scene and when he showed me Veronica and Agnese’s work, my jaw dropped. It’s really interesting as well, in that they have such a light, breezy, FUN style – and then BANG, you flip a page and are totally submarined by how the story got very intense all of a sudden.

Byron: Neil and Conor, tell readers all about the Zoop crowdfunding campaign ongoing.

Neil: Plenty more info on Trickster available here: https://zoop.gg/c/trickster The campaign finishes on October 15th, don’t miss out!

Conor: Trickster is going to be something you’ve never read before, and I really think, that it’ll change the way you look at Leprechauns forever (but beyond that, it’s a HELL of a good time!)

Dynamic Forces would like to thank Conor McCreery & Neil Gibson for taking time out of their busy schedules to answer our questions. The crowdfunding campaign for Trickster on Zoop is now ongoing but ends October 15th! Stay tuned for updated information on the campaign on DF News!
