DEADPOOL TEAM-UP
SEND THIS TO A FRIEND!
And finally…. Writer, Fred Van Lente, and artist, Dalibar Talijac, stylishly cap Deadpool Team-Up #899 with one last dose of that classic Marvel “team-up” impression... Look out… here comes the great big spoiler… Tequila and Sombreros…. Which is pretty much the only way a team-up of the Merc with a Mouth and the Prince of Power could possibly end.
But this classic Saturday morning cartoon catharsis only happens after Deadpool and Hercules at last discover and defeat the pair of mystery villains that have joined forces in a lethal competition to destroy their adversarial hero (or anti-hero). Of course, the defeat of these mysterious villains is only possible because Deadpool, with his usual absurdity, is able to pull Hercules from the soulful snare that the vengeful villains have designed specifically for these heroes… The rescue, though, would not have been possible if was not for Deadpool taking a deadly and daring (well, maybe not for Deadpool) chance that allows him to break free of his own psychologically torment…. A complex mental trap that, for the better part of five pages, sets Deadpool against an unexpected foe in a fluid fight scene (thanks to artist Dalibar Talijac) with some enjoyable, but not over the top, Deadpool dialogue…. Dialogue which shows that the writer, Fred Van Lente, not only knows his characters and audience, but also, as seen prior to the fight sequence, when Van Lente at last reveals the villains and their objectives, demonstrates that writer pays great attention to the details of the Marvel Universe and doesn’t just pull characters and situations out of thin air… which, after Deadpool and Hercules have the obligatory hero fight scene, is where the door to the labyrinth in which Hercules is already wandering disappears into after Deadpool enters the maze. However, none of this would have happened if Deadpool had not been able to track down the symbols he recognized in his manipulated dream in which he fights an unbeatable adversary… seen and explained in a very comical opening scene… under one of the most pure fun cover since Marvel Two-in-One #86 (1982).
The cover by Humerto Ramos begins Deadpool Team-Up #899 with the instantly recognizable impression of the classic Marvel team-up books such as Marvel-Two-in One and Marvel Team-Up that fans have been waiting for. But is the cover enough to make fans agree that Deadpool is the hero to take over as the new definitive Marvel team-up character…. Something that is clearly seen in this backward review… done with respect to the backward numbering of Deadpool Team-Up.
