DF INTERVIEW: FRANK CHO

From the always reliable Wikipedia.org: Frank Cho is an American comic strip creator, writer and illustrator. The second of three children, Cho was born in Seoul in 1971, but moved to the United States at the age of six and grew up in Beltsville, Maryland. He attended Prince George's County College, before transferring to the University of Maryland School of Nursing, ultimately graduating with a B.S. in Nursing in 1996.

Cho received no formal training as an artist. He got his start writing and drawing a cartoon strip called University2 for The Diamondback, the student newspaper at the University of Maryland, College Park. After graduation, Cho adapted elements of this work for use in a professionally syndicated strip, Liberty Meadows. He grew tired of newspaper censorship, and ultimately converted Liberty Meadows to a monthly publication.

Cho has also drawn a wide variety of other professional material, including a new version of Shanna the She-Devil for Marvel Comics. His artistic style is generally detailed and realistic. He also enjoys breaking the fourth wall, frequently inserting himself into his work in the guise of a talking ape, and on several occasions he has drawn strips that feature his characters interacting with other popular syndicated features.

DF: FRANK, WHERE DO ALL OF THESE BEAUTIFUL WOMEN COME FROM? ARE THEY ALL IN YOUR HEAD OR DO THEY ACTUALLY EXIST IN THE REAL WORLD?
FRANK CHO: Little
bit of both. I like to doodle or look at magazines and let my mind wonder. I usually come up with a pose or image I like and from there, develop it further.

DF: WHO DID YOU ENJOY DRAWING MORE, YOUR MAIN CHARACTER FROM LIBERTY MEADOWS, BRANDY, OR SHANNA THE SHE-DEVIL?
FRANK CHO:
Depends on my mood. Of late, I enjoy drawing Shanna more. Shanna is such a wild and uncharted character. I already have a list of do’s and don’ts for Brandy but with Shanna, sky’s the limit.

DF: YOU HAVE UP-COMING COVER WORK FOR NEW AVENGERS, SPIDER-WOMAN, BLACK PANTHER AND WORK IN MARVEL KNIGHTS: SPIDER-MAN. DOES ALL THIS MARVEL WORK TAKE AWAY FROM YOUR OWN CREATOR OWNED PROJECTS LIKE LIBERTY MEADOWS? DOES IT INFLUENCE YOUR OWN CREATIONS?
FRANK CHO:
Yes, I miss writing and drawing Liberty Meadows desperately. But Marvel is letting me play with so many cool toys that it takes much of the sting away. People have to remember just because I only have time to draw Marvel characters at this point doesn’t mean that I stopped writing for my own creations. Right now, I’m writing and saving all the stories for my future creator-owned books.

DF: IF THERE WAS ONE FEMALE ACTRESS IN THE WORLD THAT COULD BE YOUR VERY LAST DRAWING, WHO WOULD IT BE AND WHY?
FRANK CHO:
It’s a toss up. Bettie Page or Louise Brooks. Besides timeless beauty, both have that indefinable “spark”. The intangible quality that draws the viewers in and wants men to posses them.

DF: ANY PLANS ON DOING A CROSSOVER WITH YOUR LIBERTY MEADOWS CREATIONS?
FRANK CHO:
I haven’t though that far ahead.

DF: YOUR UPCOMING BRANDY STATUE LOOKS MARVELOUS.  WHAT MADE YOU FINALLY DECIDE TO COME OUT WITH HER STATUE AND WAS CLAYBURN MOORE YOUR FIRST CHOICE TO HELP CREATE THIS PIECE?
FRANK CHO:
After seeing the Frazetta Mars Princess by Clayburn Moore, Clay was the only guy for the Brandy statue. Clay is one of the best if not THE best sculptor of the female form.

DF: WHAT IS CURRENTLY IN YOUR CD PLAYER/MP3 PLAYER RIGHT NOW?
FRANK CHO:
If I’m not listening to Johnny Cash or blue grass, I’m usually listening to various audio books. I just finished the entire Sherlock Holmes novels and all the Harry Potter series. Great stuff.

DF: WITH THE POPULARITY OF TV SERIES LIKE SMALLVILLE, LOST, ALIAS AND MANY OTHERS, WOULD YOU EVER CONSIDER MAKING LIBERTY MEADOWS INTO AN ONGOING TELEVISION SERIES? IF SO, WHO WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE PLAY AS BRANDY?
FRANK CHO:
As matter of fact we’re about to pitch Liberty Meadows as an ongoing cartoon TV series and as a feature film. I made a list of actresses and actors to voice the characters. And no, I’m not going to tell you at this time.
