‘JUSTICE LEAGUE’ BATS OUT $8.5M ON DAY ONE AT INTERNATIONAL BOX OFFICE
11/16/17 @ 3:08 pm EST
Source: Deadline | Categories: DC | Comments (0) | E-mail Article | Add a Comment

Justice League

Warner Bros/DC’s Justice League is off to the races at the international box officewith $8.5M on its first day, Wednesday. That’s in nine markets as well as select previews on roughly 6,000 screens total.

In Brazil, Batman and the gang leveraged the Republic Day holiday to open on a non-traditional Wednesday and scored the biggest industry opening day of all time (in local currency). The Zack Snyder-helmed film captured 74% of the Top 5 films’ share for an estimated $3.7M (12.3M reals) on 1,509 screens. This is also the widest release ever in the market and it’s a great start to what should be one of the top plays for this installment. Brazil was the No. 3 overseas market on Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice and the No. 2 play on Wonder Woman.

Previews out of Korea, which is not typically a huge DC market, flew to an estimated $1.14M (KRW 1.3B) on 1,195 screens. Significantly, with half-day shows (and a 5.4 magnitude earthquake in the southern region) the superhero mash-up took 50% of the Top 5 films in the market. Comparisons using sneak figures are not apples-to-apples. However, JL came in roughly on par with Wonder Woman results. That film had a full day of screenings compared to the sneaks for JL. Per local reporting, it is at an unofficial $2.3M after today (not included in the cume above).

In France, the DC heroes also dominated with a 61% share of the Top 5 admissions. The opening day was $1.1M (936K euros) off of 130K tickets sold on 687 screens. Those results are 19% ahead of Gal Gadot’s standalone Wonder Woman.

And Indonesia, which has increasingly become a superhero home, opened strong with an estimated $895K (IDR 12.8B) on 888 screens. That is above the bow of Thor: Ragnarok which took in IDR 11.88. It also gives WB its biggest opening day gross ever, and is the No. 5 top industry opening.

There are 38 more markets opening today, including Germany, Italy, Russia, Korea and Australia. China bows tomorrow in earnest. In previews there, the unofficial number is about $1.3M from Thursday midnights. That market will be a swing for sure on what has been seen by industry sources as an eventual $215M-$235M overall overseas opening weekend.

COMIC ARTIST MIKE KALUTA SHARPENS HIS BLADE FOR AMERICAN MYTHOLOGY’S NEW ZORRO ADVENTURES!
05/22/18 @ 6:14 pm EST
Source: American Mythology | Categories: Zorro | Comments (0) | E-mail Article | Add a Comment

The company that announced to fans a new line of Zorro comics just last month, promising to take the iconic fan favorite character in bold new directions, has another major announcement regarding the comic series. Renowned comic artist Michael Kaluta has signed on to produce art for the books, helping to lead up to the character’s 100th-year celebration in 2019.

Kaluta, a staple in the comic book community since the early 1970’s, began his career with work on Edgar Rice Burroughs novel adaptations for DC comics and made a name for himself with his elaborate panel designs and books like The Shadow in 1973-74. Kaluta has worked with a number of major comic book publishers over his career, such as Marvel, DC, Dark Horse, Vertigo, IDW, and now American Mythology.

He is a multi-award-winning artist for his work in comics over the last five decades. No stranger to pulp hero action, he promises to pack even more punch to an already exciting series taking Zorro into dark waters as he battles supernatural beings and demonic forces. The artist’s work will be showcased beginning with the new series' planned second story arc Zorro: Sacrilege. Fans of the artist will have even more to celebrate as Kaluta looks to return to his ERB roots by contributing to American Mythology’s upcoming Carson of Venus series and the horror title, Eternal Thirst of Dracula.

The first story arc for the Zorro series will be written by David Avallone (“Doc Savage: The Ring of Fire,” “The Twilight Zone: The Shadow”). Avallone is excited to take the hero in a fresh direction, not an easy task for a character pushing 100. “I was thrilled when American Mythology asked me to write such an iconic pulp hero; the guy who showed the Shadow and Batman how it’s done.”

“I first became familiar with Michael Kaluta through the covers that he illustrated for the various DC Comics horror titles that were published in the early-to-mid '70s.” Mike Wolfer, Editor-in-Chief, for American Mythology said. “It was his delicate lines more than anything that set his work apart for me, and that's become the signature of his work. Like most of us, I'm a fan of comic book artists- I'm one myself. But in my mind, there's a distinction between a "comic book artist" and a "comic book illustrator." Mr. Kaluta is a comic book illustrator, and we're incredibly fortunate to have such a highly-regarded artist contributing to our titles.”

Zorro: Swords of Hell #1, is advance-solicited in Diamond Comic Distributors’ May 2018 Previews catalog, the premier source of merchandise for the comic book specialty market, and slated for release in August. Comic book fans are encouraged to reserve copies with their local comic book retailers.

DISCOVER KITTY PRYDE’S FIRST ROMANCE IN X-MEN GOLD ANNUAL #2

Source: Marvel | Categories: Marvel | Comments (0) | E-mail Article | Add a Comment

This summer, Kitty Pryde will make the biggest romantic leap of her life – but what about Kitty’s first romantic adventure? Hugo and Nebula Award-winning writer Seanan McGuire (October Daye, Wayward Children series) and celebrated artist Marco Failla (Ms. Marvel, All-New Wolverine) are bringing you the Kitty before Colossus in X-MEN GOLD ANNUAL #2!

“I am over the moon to be working with this amazing creative team and in this world that I have wanted to be a part of for most of my life,” shared McGuire. “Like so many of us, I started reading the X-Men before I was old enough to have been a student at Xavier's Academy. Kitty Pryde was my hero for most of my childhood. She was smart, she was curious, she got to be an X-Man and go to space and have a dragon for a friend--she was basically everything I wanted to be.”

“The thing about Kitty is that she was the only teenager on the team for a long time, and so she didn't really get to do a lot of what we'd consider to be normal teenage things,” said McGuire. “Or maybe she did, and it just wasn't the focus, since it wouldn't involve the rest of the X-Men. This book is filling in one of those gaps. It's part teen camp comedy, part heist, and part reminder that the X-Men aren't the entire world, whether you're a human, a mutant, or still too young to know.”

Why has Kitty kept this early days story to herself until now? Find out in X-MEN GOLD ANNUAL #2, coming to comic shops this August!
