DYNAMITE'S 'JAMES BOND ORIGIN' TO SEE PRINT IN PLAYBOY MAGAZINE

James Bond Origin

Dynamite Entertainment is delivering great quality -- and quantity -- with its Bond comics these days, and James will land in a surprising but seemingly appropriate place as James Bond Origin hits the November/December issue of Playboy Magazine.

A special 6-page story from James Bond Origin, which recently debuted at Dynamite, has been produced by the creative team of writer Jeff Parker, artist Bob Q, colorist Jordie Bellaire, and letterer Simon Bowland for Playboy.

Like the comic proper, the story deals with a teenage James and his adventures during World War II.

In a way, the inclusion of Bond in Playboy recalls a tradition of sorts begun when the magazine printed an Ian Fleming short story, The Hildebrand Rarity, in its March 1960 issue.

VISUAL EFFECTS SOCIETY AWARDS: 'AVENGERS: 'INFINITY WAR' LEADS FEATURE NOMS
01/15/19 @ 3:10 pm EST
Source: Hollywood Reporter | Categories: Marvel | Comments (0) | E-mail Article | Add a Comment

THR reports that Marvel Studios' Avengers: Infinity War earned six Visual Effects Society Award nominations — the most for a feature film — while best picture hopefuls Black Panther from Marvel and Mary Poppins Returns from Disney were snubbed in every category when the 17th annual VES Awards noms were announced Tuesday.

In the top category of outstanding VFX in a photo-real feature, Infinity War was nominated alongside Ready Player One, Solo: A Star Wars Story, Christopher Robin and Welcome to Marwen. Meanwhile, First Man, Damien Chazelle's biopic about astronaut Neil Armstrong, was nominated in the category for outstanding supporting VFX in a feature (a film can't be nominated in both the photo-real feature and supporting VFX categories). Nominated alongside First Man in the supporting VFX category are 12 Strong, Bird Box, Bohemian Rhapsody and Outlaw King.

The 10 films shortlisted for an Oscar in VFX are Infinity War (six VES noms); Ready Player One (five VES noms), Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (three noms), Solo: A Star Wars Story, (three noms), Welcome to Marwen (three noms), First Man (two noms), Christopher Robin (two noms), Ant-Man and the Wasp (one nom), Black Panther and Mary Poppins Returns.

Incredibles 2 leads the animated features with five VES nominations, followed by The Grinch, Ralph Breaks the Internet and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse with four apiece.

In broadcasting, Lost in Space leads with six nominations.

The 17th annual VES Awards will be handed out Feb. 5 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.

The complete list of nominees can be seen here.
LAUREL & HARDY JOIN AMERICAN MYTHOLOGY COMICS

There are few names in the history of comedy which have stood the test of time. Acts who transcend age and bring laughter to generations like few have before or after them. They have been recognized as a template for modern humor and celebrated by today’s most popular funnymen and women alike. Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy were the pinnacle of comedic genius for their time.

Now, American Mythology Comics, the same company who brought The Three Stooges back into the comics’ spotlight, is bringing Laurel & Hardy’s beloved slapstick shenanigans back to their legion of fans with the release of a new comic book in April of 2019! The comic book publisher plans to both celebrate and pay tribute to Stan and Ollie’s legacy by bringing new stories to fans with the upcoming series, and also by reprinting some of their frantic follies from years past.

Art for the new series will be created by veteran comic artist, Jorge Pacheco (Rocky & Bullwinkle, Pink Panther, Looney Tunes). Pacheco is well-versed with illustrating the comedy duo, having already done so over thirty years ago when Stan and Ollie last saw the paneled pages of comics. The stories for the premiere issue will be provided by novelist and comic writer, S.A. Check (The Three Stooges, Casper, Legend Gary), and multi-media writer, Jordan Gershowitz (Tom and Jerry, Danger Mouse, Sesame Street). Both new stories will center on honoring the tone and feel of the original skits made famous by the comedians.

“Sometimes you just get lucky,” said book artist Pacheco. “My step father brought a comic book home for me. It was a monster book with art by Jack Kirby & Steve Ditko. How was I supposed to know, my first exposure to comics was drawn by probably the two greatest comic book artists ever? Then, one day, I was channel surfing on TV when I came across this "chubby guy & his goofy friend". I watched it and was immediately hooked. Little did I know, I was watching the greatest comedic duo ever, Laurel & Hardy. Again, I got lucky. So, throughout childhood, I read comics, watched monster shows & the great Laurel & Hardy movies on a mini movie projector my mother had bought me until the films were nothing but tatters. Recently, my good friends at American Mythology asked if I'd like to be an artist on a new project for the publisher. I was excited & asked what book? He said Laurel & Hardy. Sometimes, luck is a wonderful thing. I hope you all enjoy the comedic duo's antics half as much as I've enjoyed bringing L&H to life in these comic pages!”

“It’s a rare occasion for a writer to contribute in celebrating two comedic geniuses like Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy,” said book writer S.A. Check. “When I learned American Mythology had a shot at working with Larry Harmon Pictures to bring the comedy of these two larger than life icons back to fans, I was the first in line to have a shot at working on the book. One of my favorite parts of the process has been delving back into the skits and movies and numerous articles written about the comedians, and remembering why so many fans continue to hold their work in such high regard. I’m very proud of my work on the project, and I only hope I managed to bring a fraction of the magic they shared on the stage and screen back to fans.”

Laurel and Hardy were a comedy act known best during the early Classical Hollywood era of American cinema. The team was composed of Stan Laurel, an Englishman, and Oliver Hardy, an American. The duo appeared as a team in 107 films between 1927 and 1950. The official Laurel and Hardy appreciation society is known as “The Sons of the Desert”, named after a fictional fraternal society in their 1933 film of the same name.

"We are excited and honored to work with American Mythology on a new line of Laurel & Hardy Comic Books. With the current international release of our new Laurel & Hardy feature film, Stan & Ollie, the timing is perfect to reintroduce Laurel & Hardy Comics to new generations of Laurel & Hardy fans, as well as of course to the millions of existing fans around the world," said Marci Breth, Vice President of Larry Harmon Pictures Corporation.

Laurel & Hardy #1, will be solicited in Diamond Comic Distributors’ February 2019 Previews catalog, the premier source of merchandise for the comic book specialty market, and slated for release in April 2019. Comic book fans are encouraged to reserve copies with their local comic book retailers.

THR reports that Marvel Studios' Black Panther is among USC Libraries' finalists for their 31st annual Scripter Awards, which recognize movie and TV screenwriters alongside the authors of the original works they adapted.

So, in a nice tribute at a perfect time, not only are Panther's film scribes Ryan Coogler and Joe Robert Cole nominated, but Marvel Comics co-creators Stan Lee and Jack Kirby are also named and honored.

Spider-Man-Far-From-Home

Marvel Studios and Sony have released a trailer from their coming film, Spider-Man: Far From Home. After seeing so many Spideys in animation recently, it's almost startling to see Peter Parker (Tom Holland) back in the live-action flesh!

The trailer shows Jake Gyllenhaal as Mysterio and is seemingly wielding magic powers. The newcomer uses those powers to fight elemental creations that are tearing up London — but is Mysterio friend or foe? (If Marvel Comics history is followed, it’s a solid bet that Mysterio’s good-guy act is all smoke and mirrors.)

Spider-Man: Far From Home hits theaters July 5.

As of 2019, HEATHEN will be available in multiple languages including English, Spanish and Italian. In advance and anticipation of the release of all new issues #7 through #12, Vault will be kicking off the new year with reprints of #5 and #6.2019 will also see the addition of artist Ashley Woods (Lady Castle, Tomb Raider) to the HEATHEN creative team, who will be handling the page layouts and pencils beginning in #9, alongside creator Natasha Alterici and letterer Rachel Deering.

“Ashley is superbly talented, her characters are alive and expressive, her worlds vivid and wondrous," said Alterici. "I am confident in her skills and her vision, and I am so pleased to have her as a part of team HEATHEN.”

“I’m ecstatic about being on board for Heathen. I have thoroughly enjoyed reading the first 6 issues, Natasha’s writing and storytelling is very ethereal. I’m excited to join forces with her,” said Woods.

As announced in 2018, Constantin Films and Prime Universe have teamed to adapt the title into a film, with a script written by Kerry Williamson (Alex Cross, What Happened To Monday).
