TV REVIEW: THE FLASH S5 E17 - 'TIME BOMB'

This was a very interesting episode as it focused on the adult Grace (Sarah Carter) who is the new and more powerful Cicada, wrapped up the story of the modern-day Cicada (Chris Klein). But the episode starts with Nora (Jessica Parker Kennedy) going to the future to tell Thawne (Tom Cavanagh) what happened. He tells her there is nothing he can do and that she needs to tell her father everything. She returns and is about to when the computer lets them know that something is missing from the storage location… except it’s not missing. Cicso (Carlos Valdes) and Sherloque go to the forest and discover Reverse-Flash’s Time Sphere, yet it’s also still in storage meaning that the one they find in the forest is from the future and how Grace came back in time.

And before you ask, they did try and address the two obvious questions of 1) destroying the time sphere now so she can’t use it or 2) curing Grace now so she doesn’t go bad. Joe (Jesse L. Martin) asks those very questions and is told that they would need Grace’s permission to use the cure and destroying the sphere could damage the timeline. Lame reasons, but at least they acknowledged them.

Grace, who seems obsessed and even crazy, breaks into the police station to find the file on her parents’ death and discover that a woman named Vickie Boren (Catherine Lough Haggquist) was the cause, but later when Cisco vibes the area he sees that she was a meta who wasn’t trying to steal anything, she just had her powers manifest at an ATM, which allows her to feed kinetic energy into objects, and then it blew up when the next people tried to use it… Grace’s parents. A complete accident. It’s the same thing the police concluded, and Orin tries to convince Grace of but to no avail.

Meanwhile Cisco’s new relationship with Kamilla (Victoria Park) is going well, but Ralph (Hartley Sawyer) is determined to bring her into the team, even sets her up to meet with Iris (Candice Patton) about doing photography work for The Guardian. But Cisco doesn’t want her to be part of the team, he wants her separate from what he does at STAR Labs and it feels like more set up for him leaving the series as it has been rumored for a while now.

Sherloque continues to look into what Nora is hiding and we see him making some connections to Eobard Thawne and his time as Harrison Wells. Grace goes after Victoria at a birthday part for her daughter. The Flash and XS stops Grace, but Victoria’s secret is revealed to her family who don’t take it well at first. Barry (Grant Gustin) and Nora have a discussion about keep secrets and how Barry thinks that’s bad even if you’re trying to protect someone. This hits Nora hard with the secrets she is keeping. When Grace attacks a second time, now at the same hospital where her younger self is, The Flash goes to stop her while XS get’s the family away.

Grace has no problem stopping the Flash is it looks like she’s going to kill him when Orlin arrives and tries to convince her to stop. But she not only doesn’t stop, she ends up killing her uncle with his own dagger. She then leaves and Orlin dies in Barry’s arms, asking him to save his niece. The episode ends with Victoria and he family in protective custody and no sign of Grace. The team is going to head off for a drink when Nora pauses. Cecille (Danielle Nicolet) can tell that Nora wants to tell them something, but she continues to hesitate. That’s when Sherloque steps in and connects the dots. He reveals that Nora has been working with Thawne all along. When she doesn’t deny it, Barry grabs her and throws her into one of the pipeline cells, then walking away as she cries.

This was definitely not a feel-good ending episode. And you might think Barry overreacted to the news, but over the last few years he had been betrayed so many times that his reaction makes perfect sense. First Wells / Thawne betrayed him, then Garrick / Zoom and finally he betrayed everyone. The fact Barry trust anyone is amazing. The interesting thing will be to see what happens next. Plus, what does the ticking clock on the wall in Thawne’s cell mean? Will Barry go to see him now?

And we’re at the season finale already. That was a quick season. This feels like the most comic book of the CW series in how it’s grouped together. Last week’s episode was all over the place with so many moving parts that it seemed impossible for them to pull it all together in one more episode… but they did and set up some interesting things for a third season. Let’s get into it.

The episode starts with Jennifer’s power overloading and Gambi (James Remar) trying to help. He gets Jennifer (China Anne McClain) calmed down but at the sake of being blasted by Jen’s powers. Thunder (Nafessa Williams) arrives and helps get Jen and Gambi back to the lair. Black Lightning (Cress Williams) goes to check on the pod kids and calls in Lynn (Christine Adams). There they discover Dr. Jace (Jennifer Riker) and Lynn and Jace throw down while Jefferson watches in awe. After Lynn punches her in the face a few times, Jace offers up software to find the briefcase in exchange for going with the police. Henderson (Damon Gupta) takes her and Odell (Bill Duke) arrives to get the pod kids but Tobias (Marvin ‘Krondon’ Jones III) releases them and they walk out into Freeland.

Things don’t go well for Jace as the teleporting killer (Tosin Morohunfola) from a few episodes back shows up in the police station, kills a bunch of cops, tells Jace that the Markovians want her and then teleports her away. Tobias, after an argument with Cutter (Kearran Giovanni) which chases her off, orders to have the power cut to the city so Black Lightning has nothing to pull from, then sends out the Masters of Disaster to confront him. He also helps stoke tensions and causes rioting and looting. Gambi recovers enough to help as the power goes off. Thunder goes to help Black Lightning deal with Marcus (Hosea Chanchez) aka Shakedown, Darryl (Derrick Lewis) aka Coldsnap, Rebekka (Brooke Ence) aka New Wave and Joe (Esteban Cueto) aka Heatstroke. Gambi and Jennifer head to get the power back on.

They fight with the Masters of Disaster isn’t going well until aid comes from an unexpected source. Lala (William Catlett), kills Heatstroke on his way to see Tobias. He tells Black Lightning that all he cares about now is Tobias, then wanders off. The three remaining masters are still too much for BL and Thunder until Gambi and Jennifer get the power back on. Then BL kicks butt and takes out the three metas with Thunder’s help.

Lynn tracks where Tobias is because of the signal he sent to free the pod kids. (They let the kids wander off for fear of activating them and causing an issue). Jennifer flies off from Gambi to get Tobias, but before she gets there, Lala arrives and takes his shots. The phrase Tobias had imbedded in Lala’s brain doesn’t work and Lala gets off a few shots, but no luck. Then Tobias says a Latin phrase (E Pluribus Unum) which causes all of his other victims to appear as tattoos all at once. While this is going on, Reverend Holt (Clifton Powell), who survived his earlier shooting, takes to the radio and podcasts to calm the people of Freeland.

Jennifer busts in through Tobias’ window and announces herself as Lightning. She attacks Tobias with her powers and only Black Lightning’s arrival keeps her from killing the villain. Black Lightning syphon’s off enough of Jen’s powers to get her to stop. But once Tobias is back on his feet and about to attack, Black Lightning and Lightning take him out easily. Tobias is taken into custody and put into a prison called The Pit where he doesn’t get a lawyer or a phone call. The city is calmed down and the pierce family is home and having dinner with everyone safe. That’s when Agent Odell appears, lets them know that he knows all their secrets and tells them about the Markovians. That the war for Metas is going to be fought right there in Freeland and that Black Lightning, Thunder and Lightning are going to be in the center of it. Earlier we saw that Odell has his own set up metas in pods which includes Wendy (Madison Bailey) and Khalil (Jordan Calloway).

This was quite an ending and shifts the tone of the series greatly. The series has spent two seasons being about the people of Freeland trying to survive being trapped between a corrupt government and a criminal gang. Now the government appears to be on the good side (maybe) and the bad guys are a foreign nation and a group of super villains. That should change things quite drastically. It was a good season finale, but it leaves a lot of interesting questions going into season three. And just how tough is Gambi… the guy has been beaten half to death, blown up and now hit with radiation burns. That’s one tough old guy.

This week’s episode of Arrow was one that I was least looking forward to. I have not been a fan of the flash-forward story so far and following Mia (Katherine McNamara) and William (Ben Lewis) into the Glades wasn’t high on my list of things to do. The two are basically sibling versions of Oliver (Stephen Amell) and Felicity (Emily Bett Rickards) with Mia taking after her father and William more like his stepmom. This picks up from the coordinates that they got at the end of last episode.

The episode starts in the near future with the birth of Mia and Oliver is there. He doesn’t appear in any of the rest of the episode. Also, timing wise, this will coincide with the upcoming Crisis on Infinite Earths that will take place in December and will mark the end of the series. We don’t know what happens to Oliver, but we get to see that Mia is trained by Nyssa Al Ghul (Katrina Law), which explains why she’s such a bad-ass. We also find out that Felicity has been working to help Star City from her location in the middle of nowhere. Mia finds it a betrayal and head into the city where she takes the name Black Star and starts fighting. Catching us up to when we met her.

Mia and William scale the wall into the Glades and then walk into Galaxy One as himself to have a meeting with the head of the company, Kevin Dale (Raj Paul). Meanwhile Zoe (Andrea Sixtos), Roy (Colton Haynes) and Dinah (Juliana Harkavy) discover the connection to Galaxy One and plan to visit the company when Rene (Rick Gonzalez) pays them a visit, explaining to them that Galaxy One plans to evacuate Star City before blowing it up to help speed up the recover time and saving it like they did The Glades. They explain that Galaxy One is a front for Eden Corp and bad news. Back with the others, William gets in no problem, but the alarms go off when Mia scans, but she is saved by Connor Hawke (Joseph David-Jones) who turns out to be working for Knightwatch (A good version of ARGUS) and helps them once they get a sample of Dale’s DNA.

The use Dale’s DNA to get into the lower levels and discover a very much alive Felicity. Then they head for the bombs and are joined by the rest of Team Arrow only to discover the bombs have been moved into place already. Rene appears and explains that the had been lied to and that the bombs were going off that night and the trigger was on Dale himself. This forces the team to work together and infiltrate a costume party / celebration. We see Mia take on a bunch of guards and kick major butt. Then she makes an amazing shot to take out the trigger and Team Arrow saves Star City… followed by Mayor Rene putting a bounty on their heads again.

Turns out that the bombs were only part of the plan, there is some kind of freaky looking headset tied into the Archer program that Dale plans to use to take control of Star City… and we learn that Felicity is actually the person who created the Archer program… an A.I. version of the security system she put on their apartment.

Overall the episode was fine, just don’t see the purpose or how it ties into the overall narrative of the season. All it’s doing so far is making it feel inevitable that Oliver is not going to get a happy ending. William never hears for at least 20 years. Mia is raised without him. Something so bad happens that Felicity goes and hides outside of the city. It’s almost like they’ve changed the opening to say, “My name is Oliver Queen… I’m dead now. Let me show you how it happened.” Here’s hoping that’s not the case.

Dynamite Entertainment announces its latest sought after premium deluxe set of trading cards, featuring and celebrating cosplay models and original hand drawn spectacular sketch art!

Cosplay is one of the oldest and beloved core parts of comic book fandom. Long before the Internet and social media, super fans were toiling on costumes to wear to the earliest conventions. Two of the most popular cosplay inspirations in the 1970s and 80s were Dynamite's flagship characters Red Sonja and Vampirella. Their iconic and tantalizing looks were perfect for this emerging form of artistic expression. Some of these models even graced the covers of their favorite heroines' titles professionally, such as Barbara Leigh, Julie Strain, Maria di Angelis and others as Vampirella. Writer/artist Wendy Pini (Elquest) and others were known for their Red Sonja cosplay.

Today Dynamite is the leading publisher of cosplay comic book covers and is proud to work with so many talented costume artists, models and photographers. Fans can find characters including Red Sonja, Vampirella, Dejah Thoris, Sheena and more portrayed by the most popular and talented cosplayers today. Jenifer Ann, Ani-Mia, Karrigan Taylor, Jacqueline Goehner, Jessica Felice, Shannon Kingston, Valerie Perez, Samantha Estrada and so many more have graced the covers of Dynamite comics.

On the sketch card front, Dynamite works with the greats in this medium as well. Artists in this set include Axe, Ken Haeser, Kevin Graham, Mike Lilly, Mitch Ballard, Rich Molinelli, Sanna U, Tim Shay and tons more talented artists!

Every individual foil pack includes 2 Base Cards, 2 Sketch Cards, 1 black and white art card, 1 puzzle card, and 1 autographed card. Retailers and fans can order the cards by individual foil packs or by boxes.

“Fans of Red Sonja, Vampirella, Dejah Thoris and our other Women of Dynamite heroes are familiar with the talented cosplayers we work with, and now they and new fans can bring home and collect these images in a whole new way in our ultra premium trading card series," said Nick Barrucci, CEO/Publisher of Dynamite. "Not only that, but our ever-growing list of the most talented sketch artists will be contributing to make this our most diverse and exciting cards set yet!"

ALTERED CARBON ORIGINAL GRAPHIC NOVEL COMES THIS MAY

Source: Dynamite | Categories: Dynamite | Comments (0) | E-mail Article | Add a Comment

Dynamite announces Altered Carbon: Download Blues, an Original Graphic Novel written by Richard K. Morgan in his acclaimed New York Times bestselling science fiction saga.

Morgan is joined by co-writer Rik Hoskin (White Sand, Red Rising) and artist Ferran Sellares (Grimm Fairy Tales) for the first ever graphic novel entry in Altered Carbon and the first major new story in over a decade.

In the world of Altered Carbon, technology has advanced to allow human consciousness to be stored digitally. Following death or for other reasons, people can be transferred into new bodies, nicknamed "sleeves." This has drastically overhauled the criminal justice system, as well as unlocking interstellar travel. Series protagonist Takeshi Kovacs is a former soldier turned PI, plenty experienced with sleeves himself.

The original Altered Carbon novel was released in 2002 and exploded Morgan's career with near universally positive critical reception, including winning the prestigious Philip K. Dick Award. Science fiction fans ate up the hard boiled story of Takeshi Kovacs and the New York Times Bestseller continues to fly off shelves. Two sequel novels followed, Broken Angels and Woken Furies. In 2018 the novel was adapted for a Netflix TV series of the same name starring Joel Kinnaman. A second season will release, with Anthony Mackie taking on the Kovacs role as a new sleeve.

Morgan has experience already in the comics medium, having written two Black Widow series. He was the lead writer on the hit EA video game Crysis 2 and wrote the tie-in comic series.

"When you go to Dynamite for a sequential art incarnation of your much loved anti-hero, you know you’re not going to get short-changed. These, after all, are the guys who took on The Boys without blinking. No compromise, no punches pulled," said Richard K. Morgan. "I couldn’t wish for a happier, more hard-boiled home in which to have Takeshi Kovacs make his comic book debut.”

“What a wonderful extension of this incredible world and what a delight to have the creator of Kovacs himself – Richard Morgan – overseeing the entirety of our first graphic novel. Rik and Ferran have done a masterful job bringing the pages to life and pushing Kovacs into a bold new direction," said Executive Editor Joseph Rybandt.

"The mythos Richard K. Morgan has created is so rich, it's easy to see why the novels are so successful and how it has become a huge hit on Netflix. We're honored that Richard is allowing us to work with him to create new stories to continue to grow this universe. Dynamite has experienced great success with retailers and fans creating original stories of popular prose series in the graphic novel format, striving to offer something wholly original for hardcore fans," said Nick Barrucci, Dynamite Publisher/CEO. "Altered Carbon is one of the true masterpieces of sci-fi and we can't wait for fans to check out this story!"

Altered Carbon: Download Blues will be solicited in Diamond Comic Distributors’ March 2019 Previews catalog, the premier source of merchandise for the comic book specialty market, and slated for release in May 2019. Comic book fans are encouraged to preorder copies with their local comic book retailers. It will also be available for individual customer purchase through digital platforms courtesy of Comixology, Kindle, iBooks, Google Play, Dynamite Digital, ComicsPlus, and more!
DYNAMITE & PLAYBOY PRESENT EXCLUSIVE VAMPIRELLA STORY FOR HER 50TH ANNIVERSARY
03/20/19 @ 2:46 pm EST
Source: Dynamite | Categories: Dynamite | Comments (0) | E-mail Article | Add a Comment

Dynamite announces an exclusive standalone Vampirella story published in Playboy's Spring 2019 Freedom of Speech issue available now.

The story is written by the legendary Gail Simone (Red Sonja, Wonder Woman, Domino) and drawn by the peerless Joyce Chin (Xena Warrior Princess, Wynonna Earp). Colorist Addison Duke (Barbarella/Dejah Thoris, Curse Words) and letterer Taylor Esposito (Batman, Aquaman, Elvira) round out the team on this six-page tale. The cover of Playboy was shot by photographer Kelia Anne MacCluskey.

Vampi protects a couple of professional cosplayers from crazed cannibal peers. Cosplay, cannibalism and no kink-shaming! Fans of the Daughter of Drakulon will not want to miss this story.

This is actually a reunion for Simone and Chin, fitting for Vampirella's 50th anniversary banner year. The pair collaborated on the colossal crossover Witchblade/Magdalena/Vampirella published by Top Cow Productions in 2004.

“Vampirella is the original monster girl of comics. It’s always a joy to tell stories with her, looking good and being bad," said writer Gail Simone. "There were two major enticements to do this story; one was to work with the wonderful Joyce again, who draws sexy evil like few can, and the other was to be part of that amazing legacy Playboy has had with comics and cartoons. The publisher was a known fan of the medium, wanted to BE a cartoonist at one time and provided a platform for the brilliant work of people like Harvey Kurtzman, Gahan Wilson and so many more. It’s fun to bring Vampirella into that mix!"

Artist Joyce Chin chimes in, "Vampi is a nostalgic 60’s hero for me, fun and campy. That great, classic Trina Robbins costume design, and the incredible art from people like José González, Frank Frazetta, Esteban Maroto, and so many more. There’s a lot to love there. That she was having her own adventures and kicking monster butts in an era when very few female characters were prominently doing so, meant a lot."

"Vampirella is one of the most iconic characters in comics who has had some of the greatest creators in the industry work on her, from Trina Robbins and Frank Frazetta, to Mark Millar, Grant Morrison, Warren Ellis, Nancy Collins, James Robinson, Amanda Conner, Joe Jusko, Alex Ross, Joseph Michael Linsner, Louise Simonson, Archie Goodwin and so many more talented creators over her 50 year history," said Nick Barrucci, Dynamite CEO and Publisher. "We couldn't be more excited that Playboy worked with us to create this 50th Anniversary story, and to bring in two of the strongest female voices in our industry today - Gail and Joyce."

The issue of Playboy is available on newsstands and digitally on Playboy.com today. In addition, Vampirella #0 launches on the first Saturday in May for Free Comic Book Day. Dynamite has been publishing Vampirella stories since 2010 and has reprinted classic material from previous eras. Along the way some of the biggest writers and artists in the industry have contributed, including J. Scott Campbell, Alex Ross, Joe Jusko, Terry Dodson, Joseph Michael Linsner, Paul Cornell, Jeremy Whitley, Dan Brereton, Nancy A. Collins, and more.
