'THE EXPENDABLES' WRITER JOINS PATTY JENKINS, GEOFF JOHNS TO WRITE 'WONDER WOMAN 2'

Dave Callaham already has a strong working relationship with the director, who brought the writer into the fold.

Dave Callaham, the co-writer of action movie The Expendables, has joined Patty Jenkins and Geoff Johns on the writing team of Wonder Woman 2.

The move comes just days after Jenkins officially closed her deal to co-write, direct and produce the sequel to the Warner Bros. movie that earned more than $816 million worldwide while also earning raves from critics and fans.

Jenkins and Johns have been working on a treatment for several months and Callaham will now join the duo to pen the script.

The storyline is being kept lassoed, but Jenkins has said she wants to jump ahead by several decades from the first film’s World War I and European setting. She has stated in interviews said she would like to make America the setting during the Cold War. And she has reportedly said that having the heroine’s signature invisible jet in a movie is of key importance.

Jenkins and Callaham already have a strong working relationship and it was Jenkins that brought the writer into the fold. Jenkins was working with him on Jackpot, an English-language adaptation of a book by Jo Nesbo; that project was gearing up to be Jenkins’ next movie before she took on the assignment to direct Wonder Woman.

ACTORS UNION TO INVESTIGATE 'RIVERDALE' SET AFTER STAR'S LATE-NIGHT CAR CRASH
09/21/17 @ 8:29 pm EST
Source: Hollywood Reporter | Categories: Archie | Comments (0) | E-mail Article | Add a Comment

The crash has ignited a firestorm of protest on the set and led to SAG-AFTRA launching an investigation.

The star of Riverdale was involved in a late-night car crash last week after a grueling 16-hour work day outside Vancouver, Canada, prompting the cast and crew of the hit CW show to demand better safety protections during production.

K.J. Apa, 20, who plays Archie in the Warner Bros.-produced Archie Comics adaptation, apparently fell asleep driving the 45-minute trip home after midnight. He was taken to a local hospital for observation and later discharged without serious injuries. His car, however, didn't fare as well. The passenger side was apparently destroyed after striking a light pole, and the vehicle was rendered inoperable.

The crash has ignited a firestorm of protest on the Riverdale set, sources tell The Hollywood Reporter. The show routinely requires shoots that last until the early morning hours, and the cast and crew are not provided transportation to and from the set. Actor Cole Sprouse, who co-stars as Archie's pal Jughead and is one of Apa's close friends, had apparently planned to be in the car as well that night but changed plans at the last minute. Sprouse, a leader of sorts of the actors on the show, has asked that the Greg Berlanti-produced series provide transportation to castmembers working late hours.

A call between representatives for the actors and Warner Bros. executives is being set for Friday to discuss the issue, according to three sources. (WBTV declined to confirm any such meeting.)

SAG-AFTRA announced Thursday afternoon that the union would investigate the set in Vancouver following the dangerous crash. "This is an extremely troubling situation and we are deeply concerned about the safety of performers on the Riverdale set," the statement read. "We are sending a team to Vancouver to review the circumstances surrounding safety issues affecting performers on this production.

"WBTV's policy is that actors are responsible for their own transportation to and from set, particularly when production is shooting outside the U.S. The studio, which makes several shows in Vancouver, declined to comment, but a source notes that actors are told they can call a taxi or stay in a hotel near a set on the studio's dime if they feel it is unsafe to drive.

The crash is the latest in a string of safety-related incidents that highlight what many claim are unsafe working conditions on Hollywood productions. Stunt professionals and others in the industry have been clamoring for improvements to their working conditions, citing long working hours, stringent transportation requirements and early start times as contributors to an unsafe working environment. Apa was in the middle of a 45-minute commute back to his hotel after 16 hours of shooting when he fell asleep at the wheel, sources say.

Several safety-related issues have made headlines recently. In July, 33-year-old veteran stuntman John Bernecker fell 22 feet to his death on the set of The Walking Dead, falling off a balcony during a rehearsal. Less than a month later, professional motorcycle racer S.J Harris was involved in a fatal crash during filming for Deadpool 2, which was filming in Vancouver. Harris' death is still being investigated. Stunt professionals familiar with the details of the crash have said her death was a preventable tragedy, and that the movie's producers placed undue pressure on the stunt coordinators to use Harris.

Many Riverdale castmembers are friends as well as colleagues, which may have contributed to an increased sense of unease and anger among them around the crash this week, and the response to it. "They're working these kids from morning until night," says one person familiar with the production and the circumstances of the accident. "Someone’s going to die."

According to a statement from Warner Bros. on Thursday, the studio refutes any claim that Apa worked a 16-hour work day and that it could have caused his accident.

"First and foremost, we are extremely grateful that KJ Apa was uninjured during his recent accident. Secondarily, we want to specifically address the characterization that conditions on the set of Riverdale are of concern," a Warner Bros. Television spokesperson said in a statement to THR. "We have a large cast of series regulars, and our actors do not work every day. On the day of the accident, KJ worked 14.2 hours. The previous day he worked 2.5 hours, and the day before that he worked 7.7 hours. KJ has repeatedly been informed about making production aware if he is tired or feels unsafe, and if so, either a ride or hotel room will be provided for him. The accident occurred last Thursday. Additionally, it is untrue that KJ was taken to the hospital. He was treated by first responders on the scene and released by them. We also sent a doctor to his home later that same day for a follow-up to confirm his well-being."

Riverdale became a breakout hit for The CW last season. The younger-skewing network renewed the Twin Peaks-style drama for a second season after airing only six of its first 13 episodes. The cast, too, became fan favorites, earning a Teen Choice nomination for Apa as "breakout star" as well as wins for Sprouse for drama actor and "breakout" TV show, among others.

Given its strong and vocal fan base, The CW will move Riverdale to a fall premiere and use it to help launch its remake of Dynasty. The network and studio see Riverdale as the start of a franchise, with news breaking Wednesday that The CW and WBTV are developing The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina as a potential companion series. And the key to that: Apa's Archie."The safety of the cast and crew on all of our productions is of paramount importance to the Studio," Warner Bros. Television said in a statement. "Productions adhere to the Screen Actors Guild–mandated turnaround time of 12 hours from wrap time to next day call time for cast members. In accordance with industry standard policy, if any cast or crew member feels tired or unsafe at any time after working, the Studio will provide a taxi, a driver or a hotel room upon request. This is communicated to all cast and crew, both in writing and verbally, at the beginning of production and is reiterated continuously throughout the duration of production."

KJ Apa

Warner Bros. Television has refuted charges of unsafe working conditions on “Riverdale” a week after the show’s star was involved in a late-night car crash.

“The safety of the cast and crew on all of our productions is of paramount importance to the Studio,” a studio spokesperson said in a pair of statements issued Thursday. “Productions adhere to the Screen Actors Guild–mandated turnaround time of 12 hours from wrap time to next day call time for cast members. In accordance with industry standard policy, if any cast or crew member feels tired or unsafe at any time after working, the Studio will provide a taxi, a driver or a hotel room upon request. This is communicated to all cast and crew, both in writing and verbally, at the beginning of production and is reiterated continuously throughout the duration of production.”

K.J. Apa, who plays Archie Andrews on the Warner Bros. Television-produced series, was involved in a crash last week that caused severe damage to his vehicle, but left him without significant injuries. Apa was treated by first responders on the scene and visited by doctors the following morning before returning to set thae day after the crash. The actor had been driving a rental car after being involved in a minor accident near set a few days earlier.

Regarding Apa’s crash, the studio spokesperson said, “First and foremost, we are extremely grateful that KJ Apa was uninjured during his recent accident. Secondarily, we want to specifically address the characterization that conditions on the set of “Riverdale” are of concern. We have a large cast of series regulars, and our actors do not work every day. We also sent a doctor to his home later that same day for a follow-up to confirm his well-being.”

Following the accident, several actors confronted producers regarding transportation policies for the show, which they believed contributed to an unsafe work environment. Warner Bros. does not provide transportation to and from the show’s Vancouver set. However, the studio’s policy for “Riverdale” and all of its series is to provide transportation upon request for all cast and crew should they feel too tired to drive at the end of the workday. As with other shows, production on “Riverdale” often stretches into very late hours. A source says that the studio policy of providing a car service or taxi — as well as a nearby hotel room — upon request to any cast or crew member was announced at the start of production this season and is reiterated periodically in notices attached to call sheets.

Fantastic Four #1 homage by Alex Ross

Superstar comic book artist Alex Ross, according to an account on Reddit, posted an image on Instagram that appeared to be a preliminary sketch of Reed and Sue Richards in redesigned Fantastic Four uniforms, then, according to the Reddit poster, took down the image a short time later. The reputed image is, however, preserved on Imgur, where it can be viewed.

The uniforms worn by Reed & Sue in the image appear to be an entirely new design.

Ross has been hired by Marvel on several occasions to redesign characters, including Bucky's Captain America uniform, the 'Parker Inc.' era Spider-Man, and most recently the "Legacy" Falcon design. The Marvels artist also previously created redesigns of many Marvel characters that were never used, including a notable redesign for the entire X-Men team, so even if genuine it is not certain this art is intended for a new project.

The Richards family has not been seen since the end of Secret Wars in January 2016, remaining in a pocket universe to rebuild Marvel's multiverse in the wake of the events of that series.

Marvel recently announced the revival of Marvel 2-In-One as part of "Legacy," which will reunite Ben Grimm and Johnny Storm on a search for the Richards family in a story called "The Fate of the Four," starting in December.

September 27's Marvel Legacy #1 has also promised a much-awaited returning character.

Kill The Manotour Page 4-5

Skybound Entertainment and Universal Pictures are developing a feature based on the Christian Cantamessa and Chris Pasetto’s comic series Kill the Minotaur, a modern, fantastical tale which was released as a comic series in June and includes the artwork of Lukas Ketner and Jean-Francois Beaulieu.

The feature is part of Skybound’s first look deal with Universal. Skybound’s Robert Kirkman, David Alpert, Bryan Furst, and Sean Furst are expected as producers. Skybound is the company behind the highly successful The Walking Dead series on AMC.

Based on the ancient Greek myth of Theseus and the Minotaur, Theseus must enter King Minos’s bizarre Labyrinth and defeat the Minotaur, a creature which feeds on human sacrifices, before the monster can escape its prison to threaten the world.

Cantamessa and Pasetto previously worked with Skybound on the film Air and are attached to write the feature adaptation Kill the Minotaur.

“Christian and Chris have ingeniously taken one of the most ancient of horror stories and spun it into a vital sci-fi thriller. We’re excited to work with them on translating this great comic into the electrifying movie it deserves to be,” said Skybound Entertainment CEO David Alpert and co-presidents of TV & film Sean and Bryan Furst in a joint statement.

“When we created the comic we wanted to put our own spin on a classic Greek myth, incorporating strong relatable characters and spectacular scenes so it would read like a blockbuster movie,” said Chris Pasetto and Christian Cantamessa. “It’s a dream come true that we can now make this story come alive on the big screen.”

AJ Apa

Warner Bros. Television is “extremely grateful that Riverdale star K.J. Apa was uninjured after his recent car crash en route from the set but warns that the accident could have been avoided.

The studio’s statement comes hours after details were revealed about an early-morning accident involving Apa. Filming in Vancouver, the actor who plays Archie Andrews in the CW drama hit a lamp post on the way home from a long day of filming. Although stressing safety concerns and working conditions, WBTV also cautioned that while Apa had a long day on September 14, just before the crash occurred, he had a much lighter filming schedule the day before. It also emphasized, as Deadline reported earlier, there were other options for Apa than driving home alone if he was tired.

Either way, the actor was unscathed and production was not interrupted on Riverdale, which kicks off its second season October 11 on the CW.

Here is WBTV’s full statement:

First and foremost, we are extremely grateful that KJ Apa was uninjured during his recent accident. Secondarily, we want to specifically address the characterization that conditions on the set of Riverdale are of concern. We have a large cast of series regulars, and our actors do not work every day. On the day of the accident, KJ worked 14.2 hours.
