BLACK TERROR BACK IN NEW SERIES FROM DYNAMITE! WRITER MAX BEMIS BRINGS THE DECONSTRUCTION!
07/16/19 @ 11:59 am EST
Source: Dynamite | Categories: Dynamite | Comments (0) | E-mail Article | Add a Comment

The Nemesis of Crime is back in a new limited series by writer Max Bemis (Moon Knight, Polarity) this October!

In this series, Bob Benton aka the Black Terror, is living in the 1970s and contending with his post-war mental health as well as the rapidly evolving social landscape around him. Say Anything band frontman and acclaimed comics writer Bemis is joined by artists Matt Gaudio (John Wick, Bettie Page) and Ruairí Coleman (Cloak & Dagger, Turok). Rounding out the team on colors and letters are Brittany Pezzillo (Bettie Page, Green Hornet) and Taylor Esposito.

Each issue of the series acts as both the next chapter and a standalone deep dive into the Black Terror's life and the chaotic 1970s setting. Fans can expect to see Black Terror's infamous plain-named sidekick Tim, cult leaders, mobsters, experimental drugs and more. Bemis has described the title as a bit of an Alan Moore take, but less depressing and with some 70s Batman DNA.

Writer Max Bemis said, "I loved working with Dynamite on our take on Atari's Centipede and they were kind enough to let my imagination run wild in terms of how I interpreted that world. They've let me go just as nuts with Black Terror, an awesomely designed and conceived vigilante who has never gotten a chance to venture into weirdness. If you're a fan of Swamp Thing or Sandman and making a "conventional" superhero go all wacky, but maybe want a bit more humor with your psychedelic, this is the book for you!"

“Being able to work with Max and the whole creative team on this vision of the Black Terror has been an absolute pleasure," said artist Matt Gaudio. "Those guys allowed me the freedom to interpret it as it played out in my head and I had a lot of fun with it, so I hope that comes through in the art! Without giving away too much, Bob Benton’s got a full plate, and readers are going to get a good look at what makes this guy tick as he deals with all the weird, messed-up things going on around him. It’s dark and it’s funny and it’s Black Terror like we’ve never seen him before.”

“It's been so much fun drawing Black Terror thanks to Max," said Ruairi Coleman. "His wicked sense of humor has me drawing some pretty outlandish things that I really didn't expect. Yet he still manages to keep the stories engaging and meaningful. I can't recommend this series enough – it's shaping up to be something special.”

Editor Kevin Ketner added, "I was going to head the route of ultimate cliché and declare, ‘This isn’t your grandfather’s superhero!’ but…it is. It’s the same guy. Just in a different time and place, and we get to see him in a way that we haven’t before. Probably in a way that will make people hope no one they are close to is secretly a crime fighting vigilante. It’s bad for the knuckles. And everyone’s mental health. All that being said, the best part about working on this book is that I pretty much wear a black shirt every day already, so adding Terror’s skull and crossbones logo is not only easy, I can write it off as a business expense. Right?”

Dating back to the Golden Age, the Black Terror was created in 1941 by Richard E. Hughes and Don Gabrielson. Under the hero’s stark costume is pharmacist Bob Benton, who developed a formula which granted him powers. Often joined by his sidekick Tim, the pair vowed to stamp out evil during the war. Such legendary creators as Batman artist and Joker creator Jerry Robinson and world renowned novelist Patricia Highsmith (Strangers on a Train, The Talented Mr. Ripley) contributed to his original stories. His tales continue today in series published by Dynamite.

This terrific tale is wrapped in terrifying covers by some of the best artists in comics. Actually, they aren't too scary. Francesco Francavilla (Shape of Elvira, Black Panther) contributes the most haunting of the bunch. While Jorge Fornés (Batman) has some fun with the skull & crossbones emblem for some pirate themed fun. David Nakayama (Spider-Man: City at War, Ant-Man & the Wasp) inspires some terror with his cover. Erica Henderson (Unbeatable Squirrel Girl, Assassin Nation) has Mr. Benton flying high. Adam Gorham (Rocket Raccoon, Jughead: The Hunger) rounds out the superpowered squad with a brooding rooftop Terror.

Black Terror #1 will be solicited in Diamond Comic Distributors’ August 2019 Previews catalog, the premier source of merchandise for the comic book specialty market, and slated for release in October 2019. Comic book fans are encouraged to preorder copies with their local comic book retailers. It will also be available for individual customer purchase through digital platforms courtesy of Comixology, Kindle, iBooks, Google Play, Dynamite Digital, ComicsPlus, and more!

KURT BUSIEK ASSEMBLES AMAZING TALENT FOR MARVEL SNAPSHOTS
12/13/19 @ 7:08 pm EST
Source: Marvel | Categories: Marvel | Comments (0) | E-mail Article | Add a Comment

This March, prepare to see the greatest moments of Marvel’s 80-year history told like never before! In MARVEL SNAPSHOTS, industry legend Kurt Busiek will bring together incredible creative teams for eight standalone, double sized issues showcasing Marvel’s most beloved characters from the golden age to today. Like 1994’s critically acclaimed MARVELS series, MARVEL SNAPSHOTS will be tales told through the eyes of ordinary people, offering unique insights on the legendary mythos of the Marvel Universe. MARVELS SNAPSHOTS also reunites Busiek with renowned MARVELS co-creator Alex Ross who will be providing the series with his iconic painted covers.

It all begins with SUB-MARINER: MARVELS SNAPSHOT #1 when best-selling novelist and Emmy Award-winning TV writer Alan Brennert (L.A. LAW, TWILIGHT ZONE) and superstar artist Jerry Ordway (ALL-STAR SQUADRON, CRISIS ON INFINITE EARTHS) unite to tell an unforgettable story about Marvel’s original antihero: Prince Namor! Set circa World War II, things kick off with an action-packed tale featuring Namor, Betty Dean, and the All-Winners Squad--a dream come true for Brennert. “I can honestly say that I enjoyed working on this story more than any comics story I've done in years. I grew up reading (and loving) Marvel's Golden Age heroes in the 1960s, in reprints in FANTASY MASTERPIECES. But I never thought I'd have a shot at writing them--especially the All-Winners Squad!--and I'm grateful to Kurt Busiek and Tom Brevoort for providing me the opportunity, and to Jerry Ordway for bringing it all to glorious life,” Brennert says. “I'm enormously proud of ‘Reunion’ and honored to be the first story published in MARVELS SNAPSHOTS.”

Artist Jerry Ordway is just as passionate about bringing this tale to life. "When I was offered this project, I jumped at it, being a big fan of the original MARVELS book by Kurt Busiek and Alex Ross. Getting to draw a Sub-Mariner story set in the 1940s, with appearances by the All-Winners Squad, lets me connect with Marvel’s World War II era history, and the work of Subby’s creator, Bill Everett,” says Ordway. “I’ve been a Marvel maniac from the age of 10, so this is pretty cool! Alan Brennert wrote a great script which fits neatly into the bigger tapestry that is the Marvel Universe. I’m thrilled to get to play in this sandbox after so many years as an artist."

“The MARVELS SNAPSHOTS books will provide a different perspective on moments throughout Marvel history while also giving a wide range of talent, many of whom are new to Marvel, to play in our sandbox under the expert watch of Kurt Busiek,” says Executive Editor Tom Brevoort.

This dramatic, unexpected and revealing tour through the Marvel Universe crafted by a cornucopia of amazing creators begins this March! Don’t miss this celebration of Marvel’s legacy that’s sure to be an instant favorite for True Believers old and new!

Be on the lookout for upcoming announcements revealing which of your favorite characters will star in this landmark series and the incredible talent who will tell their exceptional tales…

DYNAMITE LAUNCHES NEW IMPRINT FOR PROSE NOVELS STARTING WITH THE RETURN OF NANCY COLLINS TO VAMPIRELLA & SHAFT
12/13/19 @ 6:43 pm EST
Source: Dynamite | Categories: Dynamite | Comments (0) | E-mail Article | Add a Comment

Dynamite, the 2019 Ringo Award winner for Favorite Publisher, is proud to announce its newest imprint, Dynamite Books! This exciting new line of prose novels will delve deep into the company’s world-famous collection of characters to produce sensational new stories for readers to enjoy. And what better place to start than with Bram Stoker Award-winning author Nancy A. Collins as she returns to Vampirella as part of the character’s 50th-anniversary celebration.

The Dynamite Books line kicks off with Vampirella: Blood Invasion by Collins, which is available in print, e-book and audiobook right now! The line will also include newly created audiobooks for previously published novels starting with the original Shaft novel by Ernest Tidyman, also available today. January will see the return of the popular SEAL Team Six No More series with subsequent months to feature Purgatori and more Vampirella stories. The eventual goal is to release at least one novel every month, inspired by classic pulp novels.

In Vampirella: Blood Invasion, Vampirella left her planet of Drakulon on a desperate quest to find another source of blood that her people need to survive. After years out of contact, the skies of Earth fill with an armada of ships from her home planet. Thrilled at first to see her people, Vampirella is horrified to learn of General Orlok’s plan for her adopted planet. She must choose between her own kind or to take up arms with her partner Pantha and join a rebel army led by Count Dracula, Evily the Witch and Doctor Frankenstein and his patchwork monstrosities.

Writer Nancy Collins shared, “It’s nice returning to Vampi. The book is my own take on the 1950s invaders from outer space trope. To paraphrase Mark Twain: ‘Those reading this book and expecting hard science fiction shall be shot with a ray gun.’”

Collins got her start in 1989 with the award-winning Sunglasses After Dark, the first novel in the series featuring her vampire heroine Sonja Blue. From there she’s gone on to write several novels as well as comic books, including a celebrated tenure on Swamp Thing in the early 1990s and more recently a year-long run on Vampirella. The new novel features a cover by fan-favorite artist Jenny Frison and the audiobook is narrated by actress Kirstin Wall (Bad Sass).

Check out a teaser trailer for Blood Invasion here!

Dynamite returned Shaft: The Original Novel to print in 2016 as the publisher began crafting new tales of one of the most iconic characters of the 1970s. Created by the same author who wrote The French Connection and High Plains Drifter, John Shaft has been the star of novels, comics and feature films for almost 50 years. Now actor Will Dixon (Secret Santa) brings the original novel to life for audiobook fans.

“Dynamite has so many amazing characters that lend themselves perfectly to prose novels and we have a ton of great stories in the works that should get readers really excited for the new line,” said Dynamite Books editor Dan Wickline, “We're fortunate to launch with the work of the incredible Nancy Collins and two of the most iconic figures of the last half-century.”

Vampirella: Blood Invasion and Shaft: The Original Novel are available now in print, e-book and audiobooks through Amazon, Kindle and Audible.

DYNAMITE: ARTGERM'S ACETATE VAMPIRELLA COVER SOLD OUT!
12/13/19 @ 6:38 pm EST
Source: Dynamite | Categories: Dynamite | Comments (0) | E-mail Article | Add a Comment

Dynamite announces that the main Artgerm acetate enhanced cover for Vampirella #6 has sold out at the distributor level.

Due to the truncated December cycle surrounding the holidays and printer timing to deliver to retailers on time, Dynamite had to go ahead and lock in a print run on the acetate cover. To balance out for this, it was overprinted by 20% based on initial orders, but unfortunately, that wasn't enough. Orders went up nearly that entire 20% amount at Final Order Cutoff. This cover is currently not available for reorders.

In addition to this, Dynamite is announcing that the top 1,000 retailers by annual orders through Diamond will receive a special limited edition Blue Foil variant of Artgerm's Vampirella #6 cover.

This blue foil follows in the footsteps of a Vampirella tradition established over 25 years ago with the original Vengeance of Vampirella #1. Exactly 10 further blue foil editions followed through the years on landmark issues.

Harris Comics' Editorial Director at the time, Bon Alimagno shared, “Now that I think about it, I do recall Yoshi Aino telling me the very first Blue Edition was one done by accident, and that it was part of a second printing. Something about extras were printed and they didn't have a gold foil at the printing press for it so they used blue foil on a hundred of them. I remember Yoshi telling me he was surprised at the interest in it since it was unintentionally printed. I believe these were the only blue foils unintentionally created.”

Today, to pay back retailers for supporting Vampirella and Dynamite through this monumental year, the tradition continues. Best of luck to all the hardcore collectors out there!

"Vampirella has been one of our best-selling titles over the last year, and of course we know Artgerm is a superstar and helped bring more attention to this special issue, but believe it or not we couldn't have anticipated the success we're having on this issue with the acetate cover!," said Nick Barrucci, Dynamite CEO and Publisher. "There are very few characters with Vampirella's legacy, and combined with Christopher Priest's great story, Ergün's incredible art, and Argterm's stunning cover, we have a huge hit! Industry-shaking creators like Artgerm only come around every once and a while, making his art on the blue foil variant an incredible premium for retailers as a reward for supporting us and Vampirella. We cannot be more proud to continue working with the creative team, including Artgerm on the acetate cover, all our other creators, as well as the unprecedented success that we've seen on Vampirella and the entire Dynamite line over the past year. We've got even more exciting comics around the corner!"

VAMPIRELLA #6 will release December 18. Comic book fans are encouraged to pick up copies of the issue with their local comic book retailers. It will also be available for individual customer purchase through digital platforms courtesy of Comixology, Kindle, iBooks, Google Play, Dynamite Digital, ComicsPlus, and more!
