DF REVIEW: INFINITE CRISIS #2
BY JOE TARABORRELLI
OK Kids – Class is in session! I would like to welcome everyone to DC’s Crises 101. We have a lot to cover so if you wouldn’t mind please get ready to take notes.
I will admit that I never read Crisis on Infinite Earths. Now before everyone starts throwing stones and screaming “blasphemy”, I’ve done my research and I have a basic understanding of what has transpired in the past. However, some of the congestion and confusion still hovers. Infinite Crisis #2 is the perfect point for anyone to hop onto the current storyline. This is the issue which will slowdown, and BREAKDOWN, the congestion that is the past 20 years of Crisis storylines as well as progressively moving the Infinite Crisis storyline along with the origin of Power Girl – FINALLY! The issue opens with Donna Troy’s call-to-arms heading out to Animal Man where he ominously points out that every animal on Earth is drastically trying to escape the planet.
“Every bird in the sky is flying north. Every fish in the bay is swimming away from shore and every time I absorb an animal’s powers the warning instincts take over. Every creature on the planet wants off!”
The mystery of the dual Luthor’s is still present since we still have no clue who is the real ‘Earth-One’ Luthor. Could the other Luthor be from another Earth? Could this be Earth-Three Luthor who was, on his world, a hero? Regardless, whoever is leading The Society is giving an Oscar-worthy performance! The man is a ruthless and maniacal backstabber. We have already established that they are trying to engineer a “mind-wiping machine” which needed to be fueled by the power of Firestorm. He escaped. The backup plan: one of the world’s mightiest mortals – Captain Marvel, Mary Marvel or Captain Marvel Jr. – none of which can be captured, but to spotlight how relentless Luthor is to achieve his goal, he calls all his forces to bring in one of his own. One of his own who is ALSO a member of the Marvel family – Black Adam!
The twists in this series just keep coming like a ride at Six Flags. After months of speculation, outlandish theories and debunked rumors, Power Girl is finally handed her true origin. This act of the book is worth the price of admission because it is the clarification we have all been looking for. The highlights and the cliff’s notes of 20 years of Crisis history that, like I said, some of us aren’t to familiar with. This narrative illumination is also injected with some heartfelt and comedic moments from Kal-L, Earth-Two’s Superman.
The League’s Earth was designated Earth-One. Our Earth was Earth-Two. We were polite enough to let that go, even if we came first.
Even though Kal-L wished to offer a sense of hope to Earth-One, he carries with him a caveat that “something is inherently wrong” and they he needs help to change the world – drastically! As I said, if you were nervous to be jumping into a book where the basis of it was established 20 years ago… don’t worry. Everything you need to know and get you up to speed is handed to you in the smooth rolling Johns’ script. The past is explained with the present is quickly moving forward. Johns’ script is also highly accentuated by Jimenez’s pencils, which are on par with the original artist of Crisis on Infinite Earths, George Perez. I am only scratching the surface of what is fully given to the reader in this issue but as Power Girl states, “It’s so much to take in. But it’s wonderful!”
HIGHLIGHTS OF THIS ISSUE: • Let there be TRUTH: Power Girl’s origin • Step-by-step history lesson of the DC Crisis – Thank you Geoff and Phil! • Kal-L’s solution and plan to save everything.
DF RATING: 9/10
