“It was the ray gun and the sword, though, that made Eric Trautmann a Flash Gordon acolyte for life.

“‘I think that was it for me, really: a guy with a sword and a ray gun, in a universe where literally anything could happen. That hit me right where I live,’ says Trautmann, the writer of Dynamite Entertainment's new Flash Gordon: Zeitgeist miniseries that teams him with legendary artist Alex Ross and illustrator Daniel Lindro. ALIEN DANGERS ABOUND IN 'DRIFTER'

Ivan Brandon (Wolverine, Men of War) and Nic Klein (Captain America, Thor) team up for DRIFTER, an all-new science fiction series from Image Comics coming in November 2014.

Mankind’s colonization of the galaxy has left countless planets mined bare and lifeless. A space transport crashes onto a backwater world whose unique properties set the stage for a story that combines the dark wonder of a strange and alien landscape with the struggles of an abandoned and lawless frontier town.

"Space stories are always this polished thing, but you can't pack infrastructure in your backpack,” said Brandon. “For all our advancements in technology your gadgets need a signal to talk to, they need a power grid or they die. In Drifter there are still space ships and lasers but this is not a story about space admirals in starched shirts. This is about the first wave who get their hands dirty, the folks out in the mud and in the mines. It's about going from our regimented society into the unknown."

"Ivan and I have been wanting to do another new book for quite some time,” added Klein. “He asked me what I would be stoked to do and I answered ‘science fiction.’ Ivan had some ideas kicking around and I did as well, so we got to work building Drifter. Visually I am very excited to draw cool sci-fi stuff, but also I'm taking my work in a new direction, very few black shadows and most of the rendering done through color."

“Over the last few years, it’s been really gratifying to welcome various writers and artists back to Image,” said Eric Stephenson, Publisher at Image Comics. “Ivan’s no stranger to Image—he’s written and edited some fantastic comics for us over the years, most notably Viking—but it’s especially cool to have him back here with a series as stunning as Drifter. The work he and Nic are doing on this series is simply amazing.”

DRIFTER follows a diverse group of characters, trapped and isolated, with no hope of rescue, surrounded on all sides by alien dangers and the decaying beauty of a dying world. Coming to Image Comics this November.
MAN VS. MACHINES IN 'DESCENDER'

Jeff Lemire (Sweet Tooth, Trillium, Animal Man) and Dustin Nguyen (Batman, Little Gotham, American Vampire) team up to bring a brand new monthly science fiction series to Image Comics in March 2015 about one young robot’s struggle to stay alive in a universe where all androids have been outlawed and bounty hunters lurk on every planet.

Ten years ago massive, planet-sized robots called “The Harvesters” materialized without warning and invaded the orbits of all the United Galactic Council’s worlds, wiping out entire planets and civilizations before disappearing again. In a fear-fueled response to this machine holocaust, the galaxy blamed millions of robotic companions, whom they suspected of somehow spawning The Harvesters. All robots and androids were immediately outlawed and ruthless bounty hunters called Scrappers were charged with scouring the universe for any surviving robots.

An incredibly life-like artificial boy, TIM-21 may hold the secrets to the origin of The Harvesters deep in his machine DNA—and as a result is the most-wanted robot in the universe. With only his small pet-bot Bandit and the lumbering mining droid Driller at his side, TIM-21 goes on the run. Before long the entire galaxy is looking for this rag-tag group of unlikely companions, as they make their way from one exotic planet to the next with new foes advancing on them at every turn.

“I’m incredibly excited to bring Descender to Image Comics with Dustin Nguyen. Descender is a huge sprawling sci-fi epic, full of mystery and adventure, but at its heart it’s also the story of a little boy looking for a home in a universe that hates and fears him.”

“It’s a real thrill to finally have Jeff doing something at Image,” said Eric Stephenson, Publisher at Image Comics. “We had the opportunity to work with him at the very beginning of his career and kind of flubbed it, so after watching the rest of world fall in love with his work in the years since, it’s really great to have a second shot at working with such a wonderful and unique talent. The fact that he’s bringing an artist as insanely talented as Dustin with him just makes it even better!”

A rip-roaring and heart-felt cosmic odyssey, DESCENDER will pit humanity against machine, and world against world, to create a sprawling space opera from Image Comics this March 2015.
IDW KICKS OPEN THE DOORS TO COMIC-CON WITH 'ORPHAN BLACK'

Orphan Black, the acclaimed sci-fi series by Temple Street Productions, assumes a new identity in the form of a comic-book series from IDW Publishing. IDW’s series will not be a clone of the show but will feature some all-new stories set in the complex and thrilling world of Orphan Black.

“Orphan Black, in addition to being a captivating TV series, is a perfect premise for comics,” said Chris Ryall, IDW’s Chief Creative Officer/Editor-in-Chief. “And as the second season has expanded the series in exciting new directions, that has only increased the amount of stories we’ll be able to tell in comic-book form.”

Orphan Black, which has just been renewed for a third season, centers on Sarah Manning, who after witnessing the suicide of a woman that appears to be her doppelgänger comes into the knowledge that this woman and indeed herself, are two of many biological clones. Sarah takes on the woman’s identity and uses her position as a police detective to uncover the mystery behind what she is and what that means.

IDW Publishing is known for its authenticity and attention to detail when approaching licensed properties and Orphan Black is sure to be a comic book series a delight existing fans and make new ones.

“We’re so thrilled for Orphan Black to take shape as a comic series and join the ranks of IDW’s impressive roster,” said John Young, Managing Director of Temple Street Productions. “Orphan Black was met with an enormous amount of enthusiasm at last year’s Comic-Con which really inspired us to give back to fans of the show through a medium so vital to the science fiction world.”

IDW will be working closely with the show’s producers to expand theOrphan Black world. The first cover image seen here is by artist Nick Runge. The full creative teams and series details will be announced soon, with the first comic-book series launching in early 2015. Striker Entertainment on behalf of Temple Street Productions brokered the deal.

IDW Entertainment and Universal Cable Productions announced today they are co-developing IDW Publishing’s horror comic book, Night Mary, created by Rick Remender and Kieron Dwyer, as a live-action television series. Night Mary will join an impressive roster of innovative and original scripted content from Universal Cable Productions.

John Pogue, who wrote and directed the recently released film, The Quiet Ones, has been tapped to write and direct the pilot.

“We love genre at UCP and thankfully so do audiences. We've made it a priority to seek out great properties that will attract equally great creators to adapt them,” said Dawn Olmstead, Executive Vice President, Development, Universal Cable Productions. “The dark and suspenseful world of ‘Night Mary’ gives us a great landscape to work from and has a lot of promise to deeply immerse fans.”

"Remender and Dwyer's Night Mary is a shockingly inventive and ingenious story with mind-bending potential,” said Pogue. “And I'm thrilled to be collaborating with UCP, IDW and Circle to bring this to television. Night Mary explores the next frontier—the human brain—through the dark adventures of a lucid dreamer, and what happens when conspiratorial elements attempt to turn our reality into a living nightmare.”

Based on the acclaimed IDW Publishing graphic novel, Night Maryfollows a young woman trained to be a lucid dreamer. Her father owns a sleep disorder clinic where she enters the dreams of his patients. When a patient is revealed to be a serial killer, she is placed in jeopardy as nightmares and reality become frighteningly intertwined.

"Of my creator-owned projects, Night Mary has always held a special place, definitely the best thing Kieron Dwyer and I created together,” said Rick Remender. “It's very gratifying to see it finding new footing as a television series, ten years after its initial publication, and with such a skilled team at the helm.

Ted Adams and David Ozer from IDW Entertainment and David Alpert and Rick Jacobs from Circle of Confusion (The Walking Dead)will serve as executive producers. Night Mary is available now as a collected trade paperback at local comic book stores, bookstores and on digital devices.

What comes to mind when you think of Gotham City? Batman, obviously. Dark city streets, tall skyscrapers, blimps, searchlights…and bright, sunny skies?Well, Gotham may not exactly be synonymous with sunshine, but it will be this weekend as FOX, Warner Bros. Television and DC Entertainment bring this fall’s eagerly anticipated new drama to the summer skies of Comic-Con. With giveaways, star appearances, two spectacular experiences and one blockbuster Hall H panel, the convention may officially take place in San Diego, California, but the city on everyone’s mind will be Gotham.

Tour Gotham City Caped Crusader-Style
Gotham may be set well before Batman hits the scene, but you’d be hard pressed not to think of the Dark Knight when enjoying the Gotham Zip Line, a once-in-a-lifetime chance to experience the Gotham City streets super hero-style. Comic-Con attendees will want to strap in and hold on as they take an exhilarating 130-foot ride thirty feet above the Gotham landscape. When you’re done, you’ll be rewarded with a shareable photo of your experience, as well as some exclusive Gotham prizes.

This heroic experience will be set between the San Diego Convention Center and the Hilton Bayfront Hotel (that’s to the left of the convention center when you’re facing it). Hours of operation are Thursday, July 24 to Sunday, July 27 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. Even better, members of the Gotham cast and crew will be making appearances at the attraction throughout the weekend, so keep an eye out. Gotham’s a big city and you never know who you might see…

Take a Ride in a Gotham City Police Cruiser (No Handcuffs Necessary)Of all the options available to you for getting around San Diego, we wouldn’t usually recommend choosing the backseat of a police car, but we’re more than happy to make an exception forGotham’s second unique SDCC experience. UBER users will have the opportunity to grab up to a $30 ride in a specially-designed Gotham police cruiser when they select “Gotham PD” on the UBER slider. While on their way, they’ll be treated to a sneak preview of Gotham. Oh, and did we mention that the ride was FREE? Yes, Bat-fans, it is.

You’ll see the Gotham police cars throughout downtown San Diego, but if you want to grab a ride in one, you’ll have to use the app during select hours:

Thursday, July 24: 4 p.m. – 10 p.m.
Friday, July 25: 2 p.m. – 12 a.m.
Saturday, July 26: 12 p.m. – 12 a.m.
Sunday, July 27: 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.We can promise a comfortable ride, though we can’t promise any super hero or villain sightings. Of course, considering it’s Comic-Con, you never know…
Be the First to See the Show
If you’ve been to San Diego Comic-Con before, you know that Hall H is the place to be. It’s where the biggest panels take place, and you’d be hard pressed to find one bigger than the massive DC TV panel taking place in Hall H on Saturday night from 8 p.m. – 11 p.m. Especially since it just happens to include the World Premiere of Gotham.

We’ll be screening the pilot in full for the first time anywhere and following it up with a sure-to-be-lively panel discussion featuring series stars Ben McKenzie, Donal Logue, Jada Pinkett Smith, Robin Lord Taylor, Erin Richards, Camren Bicondova and David Mazouz, as well as executive producers Bruno Heller, Danny Cannon and John Stephens. We have no doubt you plan to check out the show come fall, but watching the first episode with an enthusiastic audience of thousands is a different experience entirely, and one that isn’t to be missed for fans of Batman and DC Comics.

Plus, be sure to grab your Gotham swag bag when you pick up your badge, and make sure to stop by the Fox Fanfare booth (#4229) for a Gotham lenticular collectible and other cool giveaways. This fall, we’ll all witness what life was like in Gotham City prior to Batman. But if you want to experience life in Gotham… you’ll have to go to Comic-Con.

Visionbooks is proud to announce a new partnership agreement with award-winning comic book publisher, Valiant Entertainment. Launching today with the release of X-O Manowar #1-4 on the Visionbooks app, relive the best-selling first story arc of Valiant's alien-armored Visigoth hero as realized by Visionbooks' groundbreaking digital animation process.

Visionbooks revolutionizes comic book reading by transforming two-dimensional comic books into a digital animation experience. By combining traditional comics with cutting-edge technology, Visionbooks creates dimensional action like explosions, smoke, weather, character conflicts and action, all within static comic panels.

From New York Times best-selling writer Robert Venditti (Armor Hunters, Green Lantern) and Eisner Award-winning artist Cary Nord (Conan), X-O Manowar is the acclaimed series that relaunched Valiant's publishing line in 2012 to critical and commercial success. Named the "Best Revival of 2012" by The Onion/A.V. Club and "Best Ongoing Series" by Ain't It Cool News, the tale of Aric of Dacia's transformation from fifth-century freedom fighter to modern-day America's most powerful superhero begins right here with the chart-topping debut that IGN calls "one of the best books being published right now, period."

Visionbooks' technology and application showcases comics in a whole new way, while preserving the original narrative and layout found in paper comics.

"This partnership with Valiant gives Visionbooks an opportunity to work with classic superheroes and create a cinematic reading experience that engages the next generation of new comic book fans," said Francesco Scrufari, co-founder of Visionbooks.

"Visionbooks is pushing the envelope with our new digital technology. Who better to partner with than Valiant, a publisher who is also known for their innovation and creativity," said Simone Offredo, co-founder of Visionbooks.

In addition to Valiant Entertainment, Visionbooks' current partnerships include: Asylum Press, Arcana, Real Interface Studios, A.P.N.G. Enterprises, Vanquish Interactive, Pavesio and Cavalletto.

KATSUYA TERADA HAS A NEW ARTBOOK AT SDCC

Source: Dark Horse | Categories: Dark Horse | Comments (0) | E-mail Article | Add a Comment

Dark Horse has issued a special bulletin about a Japanese artist appearing at the Dark Horse booth during San Diego Comic-Con with a brand new book. It’s all in the title: Dragon Girl and Monkey King: The Art of Katsuya Terada, and it goes on sale this Wednesday. Katsuya Terada will be signing it at the Dark Horse booth this Thursday and Saturday at SDCC.

You may already know Terada from vols. 1 and 2 of his The Monkey King, his beautifully painted full-color manga from Dark Horse (by the way, the only reason Dark Horse hasn't published vol. 3 yet is because it’s not finished) or remember the distinctive character designs Terada made for the original Blood: The Last Vampire anime. But you may not know that Katsuya Terada is one of the most sought-after commercial illustrators in Japan…constantly in demand to paint magazine covers, light novel covers, video game art, concert posters, CD jackets, and much more.

The brand new artbook, Dragon Girl and Monkey King: The Art of Katsuya Terada, takes you inside that world. It’s a 9” x 12” hardback, 200 page collection of Terada’s paintings and illustrations from roughly the last fifteen years (including some done especially for this book). Many of the pieces have extensive liner notes detailing the stories behind the artwork—who these works were made for, and why. With a bonus Terada interview included as well, Dragon Girl and Monkey King: The Art of Katsuya Terada gives you not only a great collection of illustrations that speak for themselves, but glimpses into the working life of a pro artist in today’s Japanese market.

Director of Pan’s Labyrinth and Pacific Rim (and co-creator of The Strain) Guillermo del Toro writes the foreword to Dragon Girl and Monkey King; as detailed in the book, Terada’s fans include not only del Toro, but creators such as Mamoru Oshii, Katsuhiro Otomo, and Moyoco Anno, who dubbed him the “master artist.” If you don’t yet know why, Dragon Girl and Monkey King is the perfect opportunity to find out—and if you’re going to be visiting Dark Horse at SDCC this weekend, you can not only get the book, but get it signed by the master himself! Katsuya Terada will be at Dark Horse’s booth (#2615) on Thursday from 1 to 2 p.m., and on Saturday from 3 to 4 p.m.
