“It was the ray gun and the sword, though, that made Eric Trautmann a Flash Gordon acolyte for life.

“‘I think that was it for me, really: a guy with a sword and a ray gun, in a universe where literally anything could happen. COMIC WRITER ROGER SLIFER PASSES AWAY AT AGE 60

Source: Bleeding Cool | Categories: MIsc | Comments (0) | E-mail Article | Add a Comment

Co-creator of Lobo and writer for Marvel, DC and many animation and video game projects, Roger Slifer, passed away today. The 60-year old Slifer, who was still recovering from being seriously injured in a hit and run in 2012, died while on his way from the nursing home to the emergency room.

His sister Connie Carlton notified his friends and fans on his Facebook page today.

Slifer worked at Marvel in the mid-70s as a writer and assistant editor but moved to DC as the 80s began. He worked as their first sales manager to the direct market as well as writing Omega Men where he created Lobo with Keith Giffen. He worked on multiple animation projects including Jem and the Holograms, Transformers and GI Joe Extreme.

The hit and run, which took place in Santa Monica, left the writer in critical condition with broken bones and a traumatic brain injury. Slifer was comatose for nearly a month. No arrests have been made involving the case.

Dynamic Forces sends its condolences to his family and fans.

NANCY A COLLINS TALKS ABOUT SWORDS OF SORROW: VAMPIRELLA & JENNIFER BLOOD

Source: Bleeding Cool | Categories: Swords of Sorrow | Comments (0) | E-mail Article | Add a Comment

Dynamite’s new summer event Swords of Sorrow hasn’t even kicked off yet and we have writer Nancy A Collins talking about the second issue of her Swords of Sorrow: Vampirella / Jennifer Blood miniseries. Byron Brewer asked Collins what readers need to know to jump in on the series. Cover by Billy Tan.

BYRON BREWER: OK, we in June are into the second issue of this great miniseries which is part of Dynamite’s salute of its wonderful female heroes. What do we need to know if we are a new reader just jumping on here? (You know how those #1’s vanish!)

NANCY COLLINS: Vampirella has been taken from her world and is now trapped in that of Jennifer Blood—which bears a close resemblance to our reality, in that the supernatural does not exist. Both Vampirella and Jennifer are in possession of strange swords given to them by a mysterious figure called The Courier on behalf of an even more mysterious figure called The Traveller, but neither of them have any idea as to what the swords can do or why they have been given them.

BB: Whoever thought that a world WITHOUT monsters would be a problem for Vampi, and yet here it is … as well as where her next meal is coming from. Explain.

NC: Vampirella is defined as a monster-fighter/vampire-hunter. But without such creatures to battle, she’s reduced to being a vampire in a world full of humans. All her friends and allies–such as her manservant Coleridge, her lover Tristan, and The Kabal– are back in her world. She is completely on her own for the first time in her life—and in a world that doesn’t believe creatures like her exist. As for where her next meal is coming from–Vampirella usually travels with her own supply of bottled blood, which she uses to keep from preying on humans. However, her private blood bank is literally a world away right now, so figuring out how to feed herself is quickly becoming a real problem.

BB: Who are Los Muertos and what do they have to do with Jennifer Blood? And there are copycats lurking about?

NC: Los Muertos is a narco-gang operating out of Los Angeles. They’re in the business of manufacturing and peddling meth, among other things. Their leaders are a pair of brothers who go by the names Calavera and Pulque. In keeping with the Jennifer Blood universe—which is firmly rooted in a hyper-violent version of “reality”—they and their followers are brutal and hyper-violent thugs who paint their faces to resemble the decorated sugar skulls that are a part of the Dia de los Muertos celebration. And, yes, there are always Jennifer Blood copycats. Which is to be expected, seeing how she is the most famous killer in the world.

BB: Speaking of Blood copycats, why does one resemble … Vampirella?

NC: Sorry, you’ll have to read the series to find that out!

BB: Oooo-kay. Moving alone: What does artist Dave Acosta bring to the table here? How does he rank with all the other Vampi artists with whom you have worked?

NC: Dave is great! He draws both Vampi and Jennifer Blood as bad-ass, powerful heroines who happen to be beautiful, and does so without posing them like Escher-woman. He has a clean line and flare for panel design that is elegant yet uncluttered, which I find well suited for a story like this one, which combines both atmosphere and action

BB: Is a Jen/Vampi team-up in the cards for this mini?

NC: Definitely—but it won’t come easy.
HAMILL RESURRECTS THE TRICKSTER FOR

At last -- Mark Hamill is back in the role he made famous!

Nope, not that one.

In 1991, still less than a decade after completing his tour of duty as wide-eyed-farm-boy-turned-Jedi-Knight Luke Skywalker in "Star Wars," Hamill, himself a longtime, very vocal aficionado of sci-fi, fantasy, comic books, pulp fiction, animation and pop culture, signed on for a guest appearance on the first attempt to bring "The Flash" to television, bringing the enduring, elaborately practical joking con artist known as The Trickster to life -- a turn that proved popular enough to inspire a second appearance a few episodes later.

Not long after, the show was cancelled and that was that, minus a few in-joke stints providing the voice -- and, frankly, the look -- of the character when he appeared on the animated "Justice League Unlimited."

Nearly a quarter-century later, Hamill finds himself once again walking in The Trickster's shoes as the role is re-imagined for The CW's hit series "The Flash." This time, James Jesse is a colorful but deadly prank-centric anarchist who terrorized Central City before being caught and spending the past two decades behind bars -- until a copycat Trickster surfaces and Barry Allen and Joe West are forced to turn to the older but still ingenious villain for insight on the new baddie, Hannibal Lecter-style.

BREAKING: "DOCTOR WHO" ALUM JOINS "FLASH"/"ARROW" SPINOFF AS DC TIME TRAVELER

Arthur Darvill -- best known as Rory on "Doctor Who" and Paul Coates on "Broadchurch" -- has joined the cast of the in-development "Flash" and "Arrow" spinoff as long-running DC Comicscharacter Rip Hunter, as reported Monday by The Wrap.

Hunter is described as "a roguish time traveler who hides the strains of being responsible for history itself behind a facade of charm and wit."

The as-yet untitled CW series has been said to feature three characters from DC Comics history not previously seen on TV, and Hunter would fit the bill -- he hasn't been depicted in live-action, though did appear in an episode of the animated "Batman: The Brave and the Bold."

This is the second announced addition to the series revealed today, following the earlier news that Ciara Renée has been cast as Hawkgirl. The show is outside of the current pilot cycle, with a possible debut of midseason next year. (Source: CBR)

siege-1

Newsarama is reporting a new Secret Wars series Siege written by Kieron Gillen, with art from Filipe Andrade and James Stokoe.

We've already seen on the Battleworld that a large wall known as the Shield keeps the most dangerous territories away from the more civilised. Such as the Age Of Ultron and Marvel Zombies.

And it looks like manning that wall are Abigail Brand and the characters from alien defense team S.W.O.R.D. as well as characters from his runs on Young Avengers, Journey Into Mystery and Uncanny X-Men. And Gillen describes the series as a thematic sequel to his own run on that book. (Source: Bleeding Cool)

Bestselling writer Mark Millar (WANTED, Kingsman: Secret Service, Kick-Ass) and artist Sean Gordon Murphy (PUNK ROCK JESUS, The Wake) put a high-energy, thrilling new spin on the time-travel adventure story with CHRONONAUTS—a breakneck-paced new series about two adventurers making history with the world’s first steps back in time. Issue #1 is fast-tracked for a second printing to keep up with customer demand.

Following early praise and immediate critical acclaim for CHRONONAUTS, Universal Pictures has optioned the eons-spanning caper from Mark Millar and Sean Gordon Murphy. Chris Morgan (known for such films as Fast & Furious 6 and 47 Ronin) will produce under his Chris Morgan Productions banner. Millar and Murphy will be executive producers on the film.

Comic Book Resources calls CHRONONAUTS “a gorgeous-looking, fast-paced and fun team effort,” while Comic Vine raves, “This is a book you have to read. It's a book you're going to want to read. As soon as I read it, I had to stop everything to write up this review.”

In CHRONONAUTS, Corbin Quinn and Danny Reilly are two buddies who love to have fun. They’re also scientific geniuses. When their research leads them to a time-traveling adventure, will they use their knowledge for the good of all mankind? Or use the space-time continuum for their own ends? CHRONONAUTS is the story of man’s first, televised steps through the time-stream and and everything going wrong in the process.

CHRONONAUTS #1 remains available for purchase across all digital platforms, including the Image Comics website (imagecomics.com), the official Image Comics iOS app, Comixology’s website (comixology.com), iOS, Android, and Google Play.

CHRONONAUTS #1, 2nd printing (Diamond Code FEB158277), arrives in stores on April 22.

CHRONONAUTS #2, Cover A by Murphy (Diamond Code FEB150598) and Cover B (Diamond Code FEB158100) will arrive in stores on April 15.

SUPER-POWERED DETROITERS TAKE ON CORRUPTION IN MARK MILLAR AND DUNCAN FEGREDO’S MPH

Roscoe, Rosa, and their friends and family know what it’s like for the world to give up on you. They’re from Detroit, a city mired in debt, despair, and crime. But in MPH, the April graphic novel by comics juggernaut Mark Millar (JUPITER’S LEGACY, STARLIGHT, Kick-Ass,Kingsman: The Secret Service) and acclaimed artist Duncan Fegredo (Hellboy), their fate changes, thanks to a mysterious new drug, the eponymous MPH.

Endowed with super-human speed, four young Detroiters zoom across the country, taking back ill-gained funds from banks — and then giving it back to the people (keeping a little for themselves, of course). But the supply of MPH is finite, and the “Runners,” as the media have dubbed them, are finding that power has its downsides. What will happen when their time runs out?

Millar, who hails from Scotland and grew up inspired by American superheroes, was moved to write MPH after visiting Detroit and seeing the city’s plight first-hand. When the first issue of MPH debuted in May 2014, Millar sent a copy to President Barack Obama and every United States Senator. He wrote about this decision in The Spectator.

“Driving through the middle of Brightmoor was like being on the set of I Am Legendor The Walking Dead,” he wrote. “How could the richest country in the world allow so many of its people to live in such abject poverty? Where were all those superheroes now?

“The idea of empowering the powerless is a superhero trope,” Millar continued, “but what if we took the safety catch off and had these guys using their powers to take down the bankers and the corporations and all the crooked politicians who had sold Detroit down the river for three successive generations?”

A superhero story with a social conscience and contemporary edge, MPH will be in comic book stores on April 22 and in bookstores on May 5. It is available for pre-order now.
