Monolith

Lionsgate has begun developing a movie adaptation of Justin Gray and Jimmy Palmiotti's graphic novel "The Monolith." Dave Wilson (creative director of "Deadpool") is attached to direct, and Erwin Stoff ("The Matrix", "I Am Legend") is producing. Barnett Brettler, who's mainly produced spec scripts, will be writing the script.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the film will also mark Wilson's directorial debut. But the "Deadpool" creative director has plenty of video games and trailers on his resume, including work on "Mass Effect 2," "Star Wars: The Old Republic" and "Avengers: Age of Ultron."

The mini-series by Justin Gray and Jimmy Palmiotti is a modern version of the golem legend, which is about a creature brought to life by magic to avenge a man's death. The series featured art from Phil Winslade, Tomm Coker and Peter Snejbjerg. Published for twelve issues in 2004 through 2005 by DC, "The Monolith" told the story of a recovering drug addict and social worker who inherits her grandmother's house and finds a diary from the 1930s. She discovers the monstrous title creature was created to avenge a man's death, and ended up running amok in Depression-era New York.

GARETH EDWARDS BREAKS DOWN "ROGUE ONE'S" MULTIPLE MEANINGS

rogue one art

As the first anthology film set outside of the main Skywalker storyline, "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" is changing up quite a few traditions. The film might not have the iconic opening crawl, and it's title is missing the standard "Episode XX" designation that the other seven films have. But that doesn't mean "Rogue One's" title isn't packed with other meanings.

While talking to Empire magazine, "Rogue One" director Gareth Edwards discussed the many meanings of the film's title. "'Rogue One’ is a military call sign to some extent,” said Edwards, identifying the most obvious meaning of the title, "but this is the first film that's gone off-piste and is not part of the saga -- or the Anakin story -- so it’s the 'rogue' one, you know?”

The title also could be seen as a shout out to the film's rebellious lead, Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones). “It's kind of describing her as well in a similar way,” says Edwards. “It has [all] these split, multiple meanings that made it feel like the right choice."

Set outside of the main sequel trilogy that began with “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” “Rogue One” is set just before 1977’s “Star Wars” and details the Rebel plot to steal the Death Star plans from the Empire. Directed by Gareth Edwards (“Godzilla,” “Monsters”) from a script by Gary Whitta and Chris Weitz, “Rogue One” stars Felicity Jones, Mads Mikkelsen, Alan Tudyk, Donnie Yen, Forest Whitaker, Diego Luna and Riz Ahmed.

“Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” opens December 16.

When "The Flash" Season 3 opens, there will be a new speedster in town. TVLine reports that "Vampire Diaries" star Todd Lasance has been cast as the Rival, who will arrive in Central City in the season premiere.

In the comics, the Rival was Jay Garrick's dark mirror. His true name is Dr. Edward Clariss, and he was once a professor at Garrick's university. He attempted to recreate Velocity 9, the formula that gave Garrick his speed, and was somewhat successful; however, his formula has a cap to it and eventually runs out, so that he must continually take a dose in order to maintain his speed. Eventually, the Rival becomes pure speed force.

Initially, Lasance was reported to have been cast as Savitar, one of two "big bads" in "The Flash's" third season; however, executive producer Greg Berlanti quickly shut that rumor down on Twitter. According to this report, then, Lascance will likely play the black-clad speedster spied in "The Flash" Season 3 sizzle reel that debuted at Comic-Con International in San Diego.

Lasance starred as the antagonistic vampire character Julian on "The Vampire Diaries'" seventh season. He has also appeared in "Spartacus: War of the Damned," "Bikie Wars: Brothers in Arms," "Crownies" and "Home and Away."

Starring Grant Gustin, Jesse L. Martin, Carlos Valdes and more, "The Flash" returns to The CW on October 4 at 8 pm EST.

gotham jerome joker

If you watched the season two finale of "Gotham" when it aired back in May, you might have heard a familiar laugh during a scene when Indian Hill's patients escaped into the night. If you thought that laugh sounded a lot like Jerome's, the proto-possible-young-Joker introduced early in season two, then you thought right. Executive producer Ken Woodruff confirmed to TV Guide that the laugh was indeed Jerome's (Cameron Monaghan).

"[The laugh] was really to keep [the Joker] alive, to keep Jerome and that threat of the Joker alive. We wanted to make sure fans don't feel that we're completely done with [the mythology of the Joker] because we are 100 percent, absolutely not," said Woodruff. "[But,] it's not going to be something we delve into right way at the top of the season."

While Jerome won't be in "Gotham" at the top of season three, Woodruff promises that the show will explore more of the Joker mythology in "the mid to second half of" the upcoming season. "['Gotham' is going] to delve back into the mythology of the Joker, and characters that may or may not be the Joker -- but more likely characters that are an amalgamation of what we'll come to know as the Joker," said Woodruff. "We are definitely going to hit it."

"Gotham" returns to Fox for its third season on September 19.

'Jason Bourne' film premiere, Beijing, China

Universal’s Jason Bourne had its Beijing premiere on August 16 with stars Matt Damon and Alicia Vikander on the red carpet. Today, the movie opened in the Middle Kingdom to an estimated $12.3 million. That makes it by far the biggest bow in the franchise’s history and puts it on track to best the lifetime total of The Bourne Legacy in the territory. That previous film was the series’ highest grosser inChina at a $34.2M total and started its Middle Kingdom outing with $12.7M over four days.

Current worldwide box office on director Paul Greengrass’ Jason Bourne reteam with Damon is $284.2M, outstripping the $276M of The Bourne Legacy. The international portion is $151.3M. It still has 15 markets to come, including Mexico this weekend.

When it first came on the international scene, Jason Bourne logged the biggest international opening day for the franchise and cracked the best offshore weekend launch ever in the series.

Eyes have been on JB becoming the overall biggest in the franchise abroad. Each of the previous pics starring Damon drew higher numbers domestically versus international. The Bourne Legacy, which went a Damon-less route in 2012, was the only one in the series to have made more overseas.

"VAMPIRE DIARIES" ALUM CONFIRMED TO PLAY SAVITAR ON "THE FLASH" S3

Source: Comic Book Resources | Categories: DC | Comments (0) | E-mail Article | Add a Comment

"The Vampire Diaries" alum Todd Lasance will reportedly play the villainous speedster Savitar on "The Flash" Season 3. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Savitar will be one of two "big bads" in "The Flash's" third season -- the other being Doctor Alchemy.

Created in 1995's "The Flash" (Vol. 2)" #108 by Mark Waid and Oscar Jimenez, the villain was central in the fan-favorite "Dead Heat" arc, and went on to appear in Geoff Johns and Ethan Van Sciver's "Flash: Rebirth." Savitar was a Cold War-era pilot from a third-world nation whose plane was struck by lightning, giving him super-speed and a strong connection to the Speed Force. Naming himself after Savitr, the Hindu god of motion, the character studied elements of the Speed Force that were unknown to other speedsters at the time, eventually forming his own cult. Savitar developed the ability to create a force field, regenerate and transfer speed to other objects and people.

Lasance starred as the antagonistic vampire character Julian on "The Vampire Diaries'" seventh season. He has also appeared in "Spartacus: War of the Damned," "Bikie Wars: Brothers in Arms," "Crownies" and "Home and Away."

"The Flash" races back to the small screen on Tuesday, October 4 at 8pm ET on the CW.
