THE FCBD WRAP-UP PHOTO PARADE
by Brandon Jerwa

Tired of hearing about FREE COMIC BOOK DAY yet?

Yeah, well, it sucks to be you.

It’s a brilliantly self-explanatory concept: trek down to your local comic book shop and pick up some free comics. That’s it – no catch, no trickery, no obligation. The fine folks who produce FCBD books try to make sure there’s a wide range of material, so there’s something for everyone. What’s not to love?

(As an aside, I should note that I DO NOT LOVE the fact that I missed out on a copy of THE UNSEEN PEANUTS…which, ironically, was my name during my days as an exotic dancer. But I digress!)

I was truly fortunate this year: I’d never been part of FCBD from a creative standpoint, so I was extremely excited to have my new BATTLESTAR GALACTICA: SEASON ZERO series debut in FCBD format in a flip-book with the stellar LONE RANGER.

The good luck continued with a wonderful signing event at OLYMPIC CARDS AND COMICS in Lacey, Washington (a suburb of Olympia, essentially). I was joined by GREG RUCKA, JEN VAN METER and MATTHEW CLARK, all of whom were strangers to me at the start but great new friends by the end. Between the four of us, we signed a metric ass-ton of books. And some of those weren’t even the free ones!

The other new friends I made were GABI SHEPHARD and ERIC TRAUTMAN, the utterly spectacular Queen and King of Comic Shops. They treated us all extremely well, extending their generosity and attention far beyond the call of duty to include my wife and son, plus the two ridiculously adorable Rucka / Van Meter children. Add to this experience a non-stop flood of customers and devoted employees and volunteers, and this was a Free Comic Book Day I will never forget.

To Gabi and Eric and the staff of Olympic Cards and Comics, I humbly offer my endless gratitude and appreciation. You are, quite literally, the best.

All righty, let’s move on to the photo parade. Some of these shots were snapped by my lovely wife, while others were taken (and generously shared) by the lovely Mandy Vantes.

See? I’m no dummy. I called them both “lovely.” Always be nice to women with cameras; they can punish you…horribly. Time for pictures!

This is multi-tasking: Gabi talks comics and cream-cheeses a bagel at the same time. Eric, meanwhile, stands close as an ominous enforcer of Gabi’s power. He is silent…but deadly.

“Okay, Matthew…now that I’ve explained the importance of fruits and vegetables, let’s move on to discussing the importance of Brandon Jerwa. You might want to write this down.”

Yep, things stayed fairly busy all day. Keep in mind, too, that this is a two-story comic shop and you’re seeing about half of the upstairs room.

“Trust me, kid. ‘Dan Slott’ is just a pen name I use. Tax reasons. You wouldn’t understand.”

Greg Rucka fell prey to the sweet musical charms of Cthulhu Elvis. It was that heartbreaking rendition of “Love Me Tender”…sixty percent of the time, it works every time.

Though her husband was the one consumed by Cthulhu, Jen Van Meter suffered the inevitable madness. Guest photo by Jen and Greg’s 3-year-old daughter Dashiell.

Let's close it out with the TRUE miracle of FREE COMIC BOOK DAY...a new BRANDON JERWA book! If you don't have your copy of BATTLESTAR GALACTICA SEASON ZERO, I'd suggest you find one. After all, it could double in price before you know it!

I’d like to thank everyone who turned out for the big event! If you have a minute, visit www.olympiccardsandcomics.com or stop in the store during your next visit to Washington State.
