DF Interview: Cullen Bunn shines emerald spotlight on The Lost Army

By Byron Brewer

Imagine waking up in a strange place where you didn’t recognize anything, and everyone you knew and loved was nowhere to be found. Now imagine that you are a Green Lantern. The rest of the Corps is missing, you don’t know where you are and there’s not a Power Battery to be found for as far as your ring can scan. Where are you? How did you get here?

Those are just two of the many questions facing our heroes in Green Lantern: The Lost Army by writer Cullen Bunn (Shadow, Masks 2) and artist Jesus Saiz (Birds of Prey, Brave and the Bold). To gather more intel, our army at Dynamic Forces interrogated Bunn and here is what he would divulge. No rubber hoses were used in this interview.

Dynamic Forces: Cullen, does this book spin out of Convergence?

Cullen Bunn: The Lost Army was set up in both Green Lantern and Sinestro before Convergence started. Now that the event has ended, we're returning to the story. As we saw in the Sneak Peek, we're joining the story of the Lanterns in progress, so there will be quite a bit of mystery as to how our heroes found themselves in their current predicament.

DF: I understand that our heroes are lost. In a non-spoilery manner, can you tell us anything about the world on which they have found themselves?

Cullen Bunn: There's not a lot I can tell you about the universe where the Lanterns are lost. Too much information will spoil the surprises we have in store. Suffice it to say, this universe is hostile to the Lanterns. Something is preventing communication between the Corps, and they cannot easily recharge their rings. In other words, the Lanterns are in trouble.

DF: Some of my favorite Green Lanterns are in this book. Tell us about your protagonists and how they may be different from the characters we have known in the past.

Cullen Bunn: Well, almost every Green Lantern is fair game for this series, but I've chosen to focus on a small group of characters, at least in the beginning. John Stewart is the leader of this group, and much of the story is told from his point of view. In this series, we'll see John forced to make some very tough decisions.

DF:  I have heard that there might be at least one LGBT character involved in this book. Comments?

Cullen Bunn: You'll have to wait and see. We're introducing a lot of new characters over the course of the series and revealing some new aspects of existing characters.

DF: If memory serves, the solicit for this new Number 1 says that there are no Power Batteries anywhere. What does that spell for the Lanterns' power rings?

Cullen Bunn: That's true, and it means the Lanterns are going to need to discover some new means of charging their rings.

DF: Interesting. Tell us a little bit about the storyline for this book.

Cullen Bunn: It's pretty straightforward to begin with. Anyone wearing a Green Lantern ring finds themselves lost in an unknown universe. They don't know how they got there, who put them there, or how to get home. Not everyone will make it back alive.

DF: Besides all their other trials and tribulations and even a battle to survive, is there a big bad we should know about?

Cullen Bunn: The universe and the situation the Lanterns are in is really the "big bad" initially, but we will be introducing some new villains and there will be some really frightening foes rising to the surface.

DF: What is it like working with artist Jesus Saiz? Why is he right for The Lost Army?

Cullen Bunn: Jesus is a real pro. It's a delight to see his pages coming in. He is really excited about developing this new universe and creating the visuals for all these unique creatures and characters.

Dynamic Forces would like to thank Cullen Bunn for taking time out of his busy schedule to answer our questions. Green Lantern: The Lost Army #1 is in stores now!
